  10. Total Ascent: 1096m The 45km is not to be taken lightly! This is an extended version of the 30km route and includes an extra 5kms of single track, bringing the total distance of single track on the route to 10kms. Riders will need to bring their climbing legs, as they can expect to climb 1096metres on the day to conquer the 3 big climbs waiting for them. The rewards however are stunning views and some of the best flowing single track in the Western Cape. As is the case with the 30km route, riders will start with a lung-bursting 6km long climb to the top of the Bottelary Hills before reaching single track nirvana. Last year’s leg-breaking climb out of Wolfkloof has been removed and has been replaced instead with a straight shot across the ridge to the waiting singletrack. Dropping down past Zewenwacht riders have to get themselves over the short but sharp Kappzicht killer before they get a break at the well stocked water point 2. Rolling on fast roads to the base of the final climb riders will have to muster some courage to conquer this 3km beast. After a quick water stop and an opportunity to take in the incredible views the 45km riders join the 60km route diving down on glorious trails towards Stellenbosch before stopping short and hauling tired bodies past water point 4 and out of the Bottelary Hills whooping into Overgaauw. Again, as is the case with the 30km route, riders must not underestimate the distance. Average riders can expect to ride at an average speed of 12km/h, meaning they will spend around 4 hours to complete the route. Do not attempt this route if you are not fit. 11. The 60km grand-stand event, not to be taken lightly. With 1400m of ascent and around 15kms of delightful twisting singletrack this route is roughly the equivalent of your standard 80km mountain bike challenge. Sharing the same lung-busting leg-burning 6km ascent straight off the start line, this year 60km riders will again delight in the many switchbacks snaking in to Wolfkloof before corkscrewing their way back out again and onto a delightful section of fast and flowing forested singletrack Nirvana. After a brief stop at the first well stocked water point riders will again be thrown into a series of switchbacks as the route descends off the mast, past Zewenwacht (slow down for the view) and on towards Hazendal. Turning 180 degrees to climb back up to the mast and the Yokohama King and Queen of the mountain, riders may well wonder what they have gotten themselves into. Fear not, upon cresting the climb the route opens up descending rapidly (beware the drainage ditches!) to water point 2 at Goede Hoop and then rolling on fast jeep track to the base of the final major climb. Once conquered riders can look forward to an epic 7km stretch of singletrack passing through open fields across dam walls, over granite slabs and into natural bush before spitting riders out onto the final haul up to water point 5. Refueled riders will plummet back down out of the Bottelary Hills to Overgaauw and the finish on the very road they ascended hours earlier Entries Available: https://online.entries.co.za/entries/findperson.aspx?pa=se&eid=3996 Check out the Facebook link to the event page: https://www.stbb.co.za/stbb-mtb-2017/
  12. It's always a pity when sporting event dates clash as we want to support and respect all other events. However, with mountain biking being such a popular sport, there are so many events and we can assure you that when we chose our event's date at the beginning of this calendar year, there were no other mountain biking events on that date. Of course we think you should come and do our event! But let us tell you why: · Our event is consistently described by participants as "the best organized event on the MTB calendar". Not our words, but we thought we'd mention it · Our routes are absolutely unique in that they are hosted on the Bottelary Renosterveld Conservancy and created by expert trail gurus, Bottelary MTB. These routes traverse 22 wine farms and offer you breathtaking views across the mountains of Stellenbosch and Cape Town and the sea at Table Bay and False Bay. There is also ample single track to enjoy while you make your way over these 22 wine farms. · After the event there is a market with delicious food stalls, craft beer, wine tasting, huge Bedoin tents to relax under, and even entertainment for the kids. · All proceeds go to Miles for Smiles who raises funds for Operation Smile to perform life-changing surgery on children born with cleft lips and palates, enabling them to breathe, eat, speak and SMILE normally for the first time! For more info and an entry link, go to https://www.stbb.co.za/stbb-mtb-2017 We REALLY hope to see you there!
  13. Dear MBMtbGirl, you can view all the relevant information and the routes on the following website link: https://www.stbb.co.za/stbb-mtb-2017/

  16. I am happy to report that the bridge will be back thanx to Tiger Wheel & Tyre. We are looking at adding a few modifications to make it even better
  17. Yes the weather certainly added to the challenge for all of us. We are holding thumbs for better weather this year! Rule #9 states that If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. We look forward to seeing you again at the race this year!!
  18. The STBB4GOOD MTB Challenge is the only official race that is allowed on the BOTTELARY HILLS MTB TRAILS AND CONSERVANCY and is a great opportunity to enjoy the trails in a racing format or in a casual rider format with lots of fully stocked water points and medical assistance. More about the Bottelary Hills Conservancy and MTB Trails. The Bottelary Renosterveld Conservancy (“the Bottelary Conservancy”) was registered as a Non-Profit Organisation (“NPO”) on 25 February 2002. Its registered purpose is to conserve the Renosterveld in its area – as such and in line with its NPO status, its core business is to eradicate alien vegetation such as bluegums, pines, “hakia” and “rooikrans” and to enhance the re-establishment of Renosterveld. Renosterveld is not limited to Renosterbos from which its name is taken, but includes a vast number of other plants and bulbs, in total some 1700 unique plant species. As Renosterveld grows in fertile soils its natural habitat has been taken over by predominantly viticulture and only 4% of the original Renosterveld remains on small pieces of land, which are either too small or too inaccessible to farm commercially. The Bottelary Conservancy is included and forms part of the Cape Winelands Biosphere which was listed by UNESCO on 18 September 2007 – as such its conservation status is recognised internationally. The Bottelary Conservancy launched a series of Mountain Bike Trails (“the Bottelary MTB”) during April 2011. These are very successful and contain challenging single tracks and flowing jeep tracks, which have unsurpassed 360° views of Table Mountain, Robben Island, the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountains and, on a clear day, False Bay as far as Hangklip! The Bottelary Conservancy is grateful for the success of its MTB-trails which allows annual and daily permit holders to experience extended areas of Renosterveld over farms such as Koopmanskloof, Wolfkloof and Mooiplaas. Annual permit sales (currently at 1000 plus per year) will be capped at 2000 to ensure that the nature experience is retained. The only race that is allowed on this route is the STBB MTB event, for the benefit of the Miles for Smiles Foundation As pointed out above all proceeds generated by the Bottelary MTB after meeting maintenance and other expenses are dedicated to preserving and enhancing the Renosterveld – our irreplaceable heritage! For more information, visit the Bottelary Conservancy website: www.bottelaryconservancy.co.za

  21. Looking forward to seeing you at the challenge Rouxenator!!!
  22. The trailrun is actually happening on the Friday evening of 20 October while the MTB challenge happens on Saturday 21 October. There will therefore be a division between the two but they will both be using the same great trails.
  23. I have been told by the police that they have someone that apparently goes around all Cash Crusaders once a week to go see if new bike stock have arrived. So the Cash Crusader managers are a bit more hesitant to take bikes in. I am suspecting the builders that are busy renovating an apartment in our complex but I do not have any evidence. We have never had any theft in our complex for a few years. Will be looking at some CCTV footage from the hotel next door to see whether they perhaps have spotted anything. but yes, agreed... dodgy okes everywhere!!
  24. I have left numerous crash marks on it which I know about ... every crash was a special kind of pain so I remember all the damage. haha. But yes. I have been trolling online sites so far and will continue with it. Seldom that one gets a small frame 2nd hand bike available. Thank you for the wishes!
  25. Yes... I think so too!! And they used the cover of the worst storm in ages to make enough noise without anyone being able to hear above the wind and rain. Thank you for keeping an eye out!! Really did not think anyone would want to steal a more vintage model.
