Very well specced older bike - 10 years ago almost everyone would've been happy riding that 3x XT groupset - in fact mine from that era is still happily in use on my wife's bike (a cheap Silverback Stride that I've upgraded for her over the years) nowadays. At a glance one can't fault it for your needs. In my books it's a much better buy than either the Reflex or Talon and it's cheaper. If it was a Medium I'd already have told my brother-in-law to snatch it up... 😉

I'll second RobertWhitehead. Definitely rather go with the Talon than the Reflex if those are the only options on your shortlist. I've been scouting the the classifieds for a while to help my brother-in-law get his first bike in 20 years too. You can absolutely get something rock solid for your needs between R5000 and R7000 if you're prepared to spend some time searching and wait for the right deal - it'll come. From what I've seen listed, for less than R5k you're more than likely going to end up forking out cash fairly soon on replacement parts or you'll be riding something that's going to buckle under you after a few rides. I'd steer away from buying a cheap new bike. You're just paying for something that'll depreciate far too much as soon as you walk out of the door. Comparatively there's no shortage of good options with acceptable specs on Bikehub in the same price range. And if you do want to buy from someone out of your locale, please do yourself a favour and use Bikehub Pay for your own safety just in case something goes wrong with the deal.

A few nice options that you could check out in the classifieds if you want to find a good deal. But it obviously depends on what size you're looking for too. I got a great deal on a brand new Giro Agilis two months ago via the classifieds. Old store stock that had to move. It's light, comfortable and fits my noggin perfectly. Various online stores stock them from about R1700 and up. I'd happily buy it at that price again. Alternatively look at the Giro Syntax as a small step up around R2300 online.

I did K2C on my gravel bike in 2019 (at least 2 others starting in A batch too) Had a blast until I punctured just before kom se bos). Then got caught in the moerse storm when I eventually got air to stay in the front wheel after a second puncture. It was a very different race to my dual sus in previous years, but if given the choice I'd do it on the gravel bike again provided the conditions aren't wet and muddy - I could barely see at the finish with all the fine spray that came off the front wheel, mtb tyre mud blobs I can handle. ????

I don't have any experience with that particular trainer, but if you can afford to spend a bit more on a slightly better rig you won't regret it in the long run. I can highly recommend a Tacx Bushido (I use mine a lot) which has a built in generator (no plugs needed and no loadshedding problems). It simulates power output and cadence without any additional peripherals - just mount your bike on the trainer and pair it via Bluetooth or ANT+ to your computer or phone and you're ready to go. Note: If you go with a wheel on trainer it's best to use a trainer specific tyre though - a normal slick tyre will wear out very quickly. The Bushido Smart works well with virtual training apps like Zwift. If you're thinking of going down that route, then this is a simple and practical way to get started. There are a few Bushido's on the marketplace between R5k - R6k. Well worth checking them out for an all-in-one solution.

Yip, get what you're saying. Definitely some lazy blokes around. As for lighting up the world with intense bush-style lights used on the road, perhaps riders should just try and angle their lights down a bit rather than head on into oncoming traffic's eyes - I agree it can be pretty blinding at times.

Was merely a slight tongue in cheek comment - humour in it lost in interwebs translation. Like you rightly point out, they make you more visible at night. The statement implies that no one is allowed to ride a bike on a public road or cycle lane at any time of day without retroreflectors fitted. The irony therein is as RocknRolla pointed out that those reflectors would be pretty much useless during the day.

So must we all go and plaster our bikes with reflectors as well? So much for attempting to be a weight weenie on a road bike.

Have to agree with the sentiment so far. At one day events wifi isn't critical (always a 'nice to have' of course) but would make a lot of sense at stage events like Sani and W2W

I can't say that I've noticed a significant difference between the device (use a Bryton 35) and the uploaded stats on my rides in the past. I know I did a 1100m climb route yesterday according to my device so I'll pay more attention to the data after I upload it later today. The only significant gripe that I've had in the past is a large variance with the starting point of a route. For example, some days my starting point at home reads -20m and other days up to +30m. I guess that could be explained by the barometric influence as previously explained. Aside from that, I've noticed that the distance readings are quite accurate for races. My readings on my Bryton are usually within less than 100m from the indicated race distance. I'll have to double check on the altitude loss and gain though.

I often do a Newlands-Tokai-Simons Town and back route which is about 60km. Relatively quick, easy and safe route. I assume that you mean from the Cape Town CBD (from the city). From there I would ride out towards Noordhoek and back. Pop me a pm and I might be able to suggest a better alternative route for you.

Existing wheels have taken a bit of a beating. Riding a second hand Scott Speedster S20 which I bought a year ago still with the original low-end shimano wheels. The rims are losing their true and the spokes need to be replaced. So rather than fixing up the wheels at this stage I'd like to invest in a new set (may still keep the old set merely for training purposes). The wheels I'm considering would be a fair improvement over what I have at the moment. And yes, they wouldn't necessarily give mind altering performance but I can't really justify spending much more than 3k at this stage. I'm not at an elite level where a 10k wheel may improve my ride significantly, so just not looking to spend that much on a new set. Counting down the hours till I can hit the road again (1 and a half left for today). Just a pity I won't be smelling the Jacaranda down here in CT though. But thanks for the perspective. Hi Guys, I'm pretty new to the realm of road cycling and looking to buy a new set of wheels for my bike. I'm constrained to a budget around R 3000 and would like to know what the best options would be? I've got a few fun rides coming up for the rest of the year and working towards a decent Argus next year so will be putting on quite a few miles before then. I'm looking to buy a clip on style bike rack with capacity for at least 2 but preferably 3 bikes for my VW Citi Golf. Does anyone have some advise on which racks would be a good fit for the hatchback style? FYI I'm planning to sell my car early next year (most likely for another hatchback) so don't want to waste the money on getting a towbar fitted at this stage for a towbar mounted rack.

I assume you are referring to road rides?... I can join in for a few Sunday rides here and there (Sundays are usually my play days on the MTB routes). What time would you consider starting and what route do you usually ride?
