  1. Hi Wazza When I built my bike I fitted 48 x 16t 3/32" and the chain skipped over my Surly steel cog regardless of which chain I tried. I then fitted a 49 x 16t 3/32" (which tightened up the wrap around the cog just a bit more) but it still skipped when excellerating hard.I changed everything to 49 x16t 1/8" and that was the end of my problems. "Fatfoot" cogs have much wider teeth and obviously make better contact with the chain. If you run 42 x 21t for instance, you would also automatically get better wrap. think about it!
  2. I just want to give my 5 cents worth of info.....a successful SS build is a function of the chain stay length and the gearing you choose. It will dictate how much tension is on your single speed tensioner. If you go with standard 9-speed chainring, cog and chain, there is a good chance that you would not have enough chain-wrap around your cog. Even if everything is brand new, the chain will skip on the rear cog when pedaling with power. 1/8th inch track components are more difficult to source but far less likely to skip on the rear cog.....nough said......
  3. Love the specialized....
  4. Looking good.....something tells me you enjoy this bike and mean to ride it......You get a bit of respect when you ride a SS with the right crowd....
  5. I did a all category search on e-bay for Vacari........and thats how the **** started.......dont do it!
  6. i use ACOR brake levers. Nice two finger jobbies, although simple. attahed the frame I really want. Reynolds 853 tubing. Yumm... Cheap in the US but dont think they ever made it here.
  7. What I did with my old bike lying around and giving my wife a reason to moan. Running 49 x 16t gearing. I need it to keep up with the fast groups, but even so I spin my little legs off when the pace gets really hot. Its great fun and although I would love the look of my bike, a better frame is just a matter of time.
  8. I just love these frames.....
  9. Interested in hearing what gearing Roadies use on the single speed bikes and who they ride with. Please post some pics. Road bike pics lost amongst the MTB singles in other topics. Ever try to buy a chainwhip for 1/8th cogs?
  10. I wonder which has the bigger following....Road single speeders or MTB single speeders? I know who has bigger trees!
  11. Trial and error made me a single speed expert...well with road bikes anyway. Don't waste your time with 3/32 or 9-speed stuff if you using a spring loaded chain tensioner. I built my bike with 49 - 16 gearing to keep up with the fast groups. Loving it.....
