  1. Admittedly I am not a serious cyclist and tend to do this for fun and a bit of exercise so I do not put too much effort into eating as well as (it seems) you eat. It is a good suggestion and I prefer to bring my own grub always - this time though my bag was bursting at the seems due to carrying work clothes for 2 so a meal was out of the question. Luckily the canteen is OK with some relatively quality options, but agreed that I could do better. thank you for your advice, I am sure if I start making more a habit out of it I will need to do something about a) better/quality food and b) more calories as a few times in 2 weeks has seen me drop quite a lot of weight (but this may stabilise). I see you're in Dbn - you don't know of a group going between Morningside/Berea/Glenwood areas towards Umhlanga in the mornings and vice versa in the afternoons? Desperately looking for a buddy to commute with.
  2. I spend waaaay more than my fuel bill on canteen lunch.....but it's still worth it. 3pm is a serious wall
  3. Yoh crickets here.....very lonely ride in this morning. Flipping awesome day for it in durbs, getting warm now though.
  4. Anyone needing to go between Durban central (Glenwood, Morningside etc) to Uhmlanga or La Lucia in the mornings and vice versa in the afternoons? Let's get this going
  5. Thanks guys. Fanievb - what you're saying about non-tubeless tyres makes me think I'll stick with the current tyres for now with tubes and change when I change tyres - no problem - not so keen to wait but will do so. Is that "duct tape" the business then - I see some people saying it isn't as good. Capediver - so you use tape and a tube then - i.e. at the same time it seems, I suppose the tube lasts a bit longer? Re. safety - I'm looking for something reasonable, I realise that inherently the sport has risks of course (I read the label on the box ). Is Stans the only recommended lube then? Thanks again guys. Anyone else care to comment re. tyres selection (what I currently have and going forward)?
  6. Hi guys, I see a few short discussions on this in my searches here. I'm struggling to decide between which method to use - tape or cut tubes. I have 29's and so expect if I go the tube route to use 24" tubes. I see there is some talk of what type of tape to use and it seems that guys recommend "Gorilla tape" or "gaffer tape, has anyone used other types of tape and has anyone tried the self vulcanising silicon type tape at all? Are these methods as safe as a Stans kit or as safe as the UST rims option? Also, I have Scwalbe Rocket Rons and DT Swiss rims (does "48SD" ring a bell at all?), will these work nicely - any experience with them? I see they are very very light tyres. What is a good tyre choice for KZN trails etc, probably a fair bit of tar for training too? Are tubeless conversions with non UST tyres OK/safe enough and should I be concerned about safety - I'm not too risk averse, just wanting to see what peoples experiences are. Should I wait untill the current tyres are old and then do a conversion with a new set? Sorry, new to the sport and keen to get stuck in but still finding my way around different components and things that okes do? Thanks for any advice that can be offered.
  7. Awesome V12, can't wait. I love the idea of using an old bike but love the idea of horizontal or sliding dropouts so have been thinking about this a few days. That said I've got to get into cycling first before I delve into SS stuff. Good luck and please put progress up.
  8. I'm not a metallurgy fundi, but am an engineer. That said I do have some welding design experience but wouldn't claim to be an authority at all. I did a bit of homework and found conflicting info, but some folks definitely prefer to post heat treat. If using TIG it's possibly OK. That said, your welder is probably very knowledgeable. I remember a mate always "soaking" bmx's frames but never roll cages (different welds, different thicknesses and different weld processes). Can't wait to see some progress!
  9. That sounds interesting - steel frame I hope? Are you needing to do any post heat treatment to ensure the heat affected zone on the weld stays OK?
  10. Thanks. This looks quite nice...http://www.extremelights.co.za/shop/untrafire-c1-with-belt-clip/ Anyone disagree? I must say I bought a very cheap knockoff cree (I think) LED powered head lamp a while back for trail running at a china mall type place for R120.00 and it is incredibly bright. It's great for trail running untill the sun comes up (2-3 hours life at full brightness) and then starts to fade, should be fine unless I'm night riding I suppose. Just need to mount it somehow.
  11. Hi gents, what lights do you recommend? I know the more the better - but what is best for a budget conscious chap? I do a bit of trail running, not sure what kind of dual solution there is but that would be ideal too. Great thread BTW.
  12. Yup, sorry - should have used the quote thingymerbob. Shot for the info. Looking at 22 km's with a bunch of path hopping and going on the verge might take me a while to get in/out. It's flat most of the way but each way has a heavy climb at the end (and then obviously a nice decent at the start though.
  13. Nice, how long did that take on average?
  14. Thanks man, been reading that - quite a few pages to get through ;-)
