  1. I have an old set of 26" Giant wheels that came with my Anthem (maybe from the USA). They run on no-name 24 hole hubs. Front wheel is still perfect, but on the rear the freebody is shot; it slips. My LBS (small town) told me it's unrepairable because spares are not available. Is this really the case? I'd love to use that rear wheel on my indoor trainer. Thanks guys!
  2. Thanks for the support guys. I'm looking at 6 months rehab! Apparently it takes a full 12 months to get back to where to were before the injury. It's 6 weeks on crutches with the cast, then another 6 weeks on crutches without the cast. Extensive physio to get the tendon back to full strength. It's a very slow process because there is minimal blood flow to the tendon. But the ortho said there are two things you can start doing after 6 weeks. swimming and slowly riding a training bike. That's why I'm looking for an indoor trainer. @Rabubi: I'm 36, turning 37 next week. I read on the internet that the average age for this injury is 36.4 years old. Guess that makes me almost exactly average! And I am fit and not overweight at all. Bummer.
  3. I was playing some touch rugby on Saturday and when I reached to catch a high pass, I heard a loud pop and it felt like someone kicked me in the back of my lower leg. I knew immediately that I'm in big trouble. Achilles tendon snapped clean off! I had surgery on Monday evening to repair and now begins the extremely looooong rehab process. And my mountain biking was going so well; I've entered the TransBaviaans and I was planning to do quite a couple of races this year. Very disappointing. But I'm positive and I'm getting all the stuff ready for rehab. If anyone has an indoor trainer lying around for sale, please contact me. Also looking for a 26" rear wheel to use on the trainer - so nothing fancy needed. Stuff needs to be in Cape Town or Jeffreys Bay. Thanks guys!
  4. I also had a bad experience as a result of a hubbers dishonesty and my own stupidity. I bought a Giant Anthem about 3 months ago. This was my first MTB and I did not know anything about bikes. I asked the following questions and got these answers: Me: How old is the bike? Seller: Ive had it for about two years and the guy before me for about a year. The truth: The bike turned out to be a 2007 model! Me: Are the shocks and components fine and have they been serviced? Seller: Bike was serviced at the beginning of the year and everything was checked. The Truth: The rear shock leaks air and the front leaks oil. Brakes were a mis-matched pair and had to be replaced. The rear free wheel body was completely shot, plus the hubs were no-name 24 hole hubs with no replacement components available. Thus a new wheel set had to be bought. The shifters are quite stiff and will probably have to be replaced. I've fixed most of the problems and its probably too late to complain now. But I'm still considering emailing the guy to give him piece of my mind. Do I have any other options?
  5. Hi Guys The K2C was my first MTB race and I really enjoyed it - apart from the walking up die ou wapad. I started mountain biking in July and ended up doing a 5:40, so I guess that's OK. Could have been alot better had it not been for the traffic jam in the beginning, but we made the best of it and tried to get some laughs out of our fellow pedestrians. I chatted and shared some fun with many great people along the way. But then there were also many a-holes. I mean seriously, if you're that good and you need that rude, competitive attitude, why are you starting in Group G in the first place? Anyway, great race. Awesome experience. And my biggest lesson learned: a seeding is seriously important for this race and a good, fun attitude is vital!
