    Wheels

They say if the frame is the heart of a bicycle, then the wheels are the soul. Wheels can alter a bicycles ride quality quite a lot. It's a fairly technical subject. Wheels must be immensely strong but at the same time quite compliant. When you stand up and sprint you don't want them flexing sideways, but by the same token, on a rough surface one wants some absorbtion from them. A mate of mine has got Campag Eurus (spell?) wheels but reckons the set one notch below, Zhonda's I think they're called, are almost as good but a lot cheaper. Do take your weight into consideration when buying wheels! Some have a max. body weight rating, make very sure of this. Otherwise you'll perpetually have broken spokes, cracks etc. Incidently, my mate with the Campags is a 85 - 90 kg job and he's never had a problem.
  2. Jan Opperman, who owns High Street Cycles in Durban Road, B/ville - Durbanville did me a couple of years ago for R75. I recently heard a bizarre story of a guy who was advised by Cyclelab Fourways to lower his saddle by 3.5 cms!!!! This particular cyclist was no rookie, has been cycling for years so his own judgement could NEVER have been so inaccurate. Secondly he had to wait two weeks for his "appointment" with them as they were "so busy". He pitched up mega-early for his appointment and was attended to immediately, and was also subsequently told he could have come the previous day.
  3. Hey, Spearo, I fitted an SRAM X-9 (but with the appropriate shifters) rear some time back and I cannot see myself ever going back to Shimano. I've had an LX front derailleur all along though and will probably also replace this with SRAM. Although, having said that, the front shifting is not nearly as critical as the rear and they do tend to last much longer, so I wouldn't stress toooo much over it. I just think their stuff is engineered beautifully and is superior. In fact the only Shimano stuff on my ageing mtb are my pedals and front der. Big Ben, wish I had a dad like you! Are you riding in the Nationals? I'm in Vets B.
