  1. I phoned them but the CT branch says that Merida special is only available in their JHB branch
  2. Oh and if I'm going to be doing a lot of casual road cycling is it fine with these tyres or a bad idea? I know one buy extra slicks and swop them, but one I'm sure it won't look so good thin slicks on a MB and also maybe not all that easy swopping everytime ... and then of course the extra cost of an extra set of tyres. I hope I'm looking at the right type bikes for what I want, the all round road & off-road ... just worried about makin a mistake with my moola & regretting after...
  3. Eish I had to ask lol ... hm ok so how does this compare to the SB Spectra Comp I was looking at? http://www.silverbac...pectra-29-comp/ And already still more uncertainty whether the 29" or 27,5" would be better for a newbie like me that wants to do some road and some off road. Ps ... So it's pretty apparent already all the wars going on lol ... Brand vs Brand (e.g. SB vs Merida), 29" vs 27.5", Vodka vs Whiskey....
  4. Thanks again everyone for you input. Hey Gecko. Thanks I appreciate the honesty. So as I asked Mntboy earlier, you say although seriously underwhelming for the major dudes here, the price is still worth the specs? Or would you have anything better to suggest for the same price? I know it's laughable here lol but originally I was only looking to spend R5K, but now have upped it (not eagerly I might add as my budget very tight) to try get something better. But IF it doesn't make much difference than from a R4K or R5K bike then I feeling like I'm going to be wasting my extra cash. As I mentioned before, at THIS particular stage I'm not looking to become a fulltime extreme mountain biker, wanting an all rounder bike that's decent, but it still has to feel worth the R6600, and better than the R3K bike I had a few years back. Is there anything else I should consider for the same price?
  5. Hi & Thanks Mntboy for your input, so you think as an entry level it's at least worth the specs? For me I know all is going to laugh but R6600 is still a huge amount, and not sure how comfortable I feel about spending it if it's "just another bike" ... I had a Raleigh a few years ago & that cost me about R3K and it seemed fine ... would this rteally be better & worth the extra 3 and a half grand?
  6. So do you guys think a SB Spectra Com is a good "all rounder" (onroad & offroad) and with decent component specs for R6600? http://www.silverbac...pectra-29-comp/
  7. Thanks every one (and especially Gecko) for all your great input. With one day in on the forum alone & with no bike YET ... it seems like it's already getting complex even in just this one post lol. Well considering I'm a total complete unknowledgable newbie, I think it might be best to go new, caue yep I don't know much about ... wait let me rephrase ... I don't know Anything about maintenance & yes all these different componenets and potential upgrading sounds very overwhelming. Another day out at the bike shops & picking salesmans brains (have to get 3rd and 4th opinions to find out who is actually telling the truth & not just talkin BS to make a sell) ... I'm now thinking the Silverback 29'er Spectra Comp ... what you think of this, going around R6600 ... worth it? Decent components for the price? http://www.silverbacklab.com/bike/mountain/silverback-spectra-29-comp/ And is it good enough to do semi-offroad? Like easy parts of Tokia or Silvermine? (no nothing extreme down hill of course) Ps ... I'm really looking for at this stage a bike that I can do road & also some occasional offroad, like Tokia & silvermine etc. The mountain isn't close to where I stay so I know I won't get there often & will want to use the bike to just be more active daily which would be road, But then want to get it to the mountain or more specifically country offroads when I can. Thanks again
  8. Thanks Gecko. I was planning on also doin it with my hands tied behind my back, so ok will dump the brakes
  9. Thanks Odin I'm also hearing conflicting on the 29 vs 27,5 ... so the SB Spectra comp vs SB Slade 4. Besides the wheels size, I'm sure that SB Spectra also got better comps due to it being a higher priced bike right, but can anyone recommend the Slade 4 or should I stick to the Spectra? Not sure how much it matters, I'm 1,78m tall & round 84kg. Also what frame size is best for me? I thought I would be a large, but was told I'm a medium. Slade 4 http://www.silverbacklab.com/bike/mountain/silverback-slade-4/ Spectra Comp http://www.silverbacklab.com/bike/mountain/silverback-spectra-29-comp/
  10. Hi I'm looking for an entry level bike ... I'd appreciate some feedback advice Trek-marlin-6 vs Silverback Spectra Comp http://www.silverbacklab.com/bike/mountain/silverback-spectra-29-comp/ http://mountain-bikes.gearsuite.com/l/9407/2015-Trek-Marlin-6 Many thanks Rob
  11. Hi all I'm newbie & need some help please. I don't know a thing a bout mountain bikes but I want to get myself an entry level bike around about R5000.There are so many makes & I know that components is what one should look at , but I also don't know much about that.Could you please suggest any good quality entry level bikes? And what components name brands do I need to look for?I've heard the Silverback is made by a local company & apparently there's a certain amount of debate regarding their quality vs other more well known, but then again I've also heard the Silverback get one better components for a lower priced bike to it's competition. Seen so far the Slade 4 & Stride 20 ... think Slade is the better one? I'm sure a hard back will be fine as is cheaper too, but with decent front shocks that can lock when on road I guess ... and are brakes important for a beginner?I'm not planning on doing any racing, it's more just for being active, so a bit on hard road and a bit of dust road now and then. I'd really appreciate your advice.TIA
  12. Oh and ps ... what size bike am I looking at? I'm about 84kg & 1.79m height. And what is the ideal wheel size for a recreational biker ... the mid 27.5" ? Thanks again
