I believe the big problem (and this is not restricted to bike shops only) is that services providers happily sell merchandise and take our money but do not feel that good service should form part of the process. Most sources I've consulted pointed out that bike shops make very little commission on the bikes (and hence creates no room for price negotiation with bike purchases). As most people (and this is an assumption) buy bikes that cost less than R5,000, my conclusion would be that most bike shops do not worry about providing a good service in this region, as the potential revenue does not justify the effort required/sought by the customer. Furthermore, once you've bought a bike, chances are slim that you'll return to the shop for extended service. As apposed to a vehicle purchase, where your after sales income is almost guaranteed, as you have to take your vehicle to a service group for service. I think that most services have gotten used to the idea that people will buy from them, regardless if one customer gets upset every now and then. My feeling is that if the same amounts of complaints circulate for established bike shops as with online shops (recall Bike Hut? EVERYONE here had something to report; subsequently, their support dwindled quickly), things will definetaly change. Something like a shop rating system on here would make things very interesting - shops earn points / lose points for poor service, bad products sold, poor advice, lack of walk-in interest, etc. aggeneys2010-03-24 04:25:22
  2. I had exactly the same problem bikemonster experienced early this year. Was also in the market for a R20k bike. Was promised by 3 shops that they would phone me up as soon as stock arrived (at that time, I was looking for a Merida HFS 1000D, and most shops were waiting for stock). Till now; NOTHING. I got my bike in the mean time from a reputable shop, but was left feeling violated. The problem with any good business is that they become too successful for their own good; they took my money and after the cash register closed, it was "next customer", as the shop was just so busy that the people working there just couldn't get to customers quickly enough. But more or less the same story; info was limited in the shop. I feel that most shops are loosing a lot of business because some shop stewards just couldn?t care that you are there (despite the fact that you have R20k in your pocket you want to spend). I use this as a barometer for service. If I see that the shop is not really interested in terms of assisting me, than I don?t spend my money there.   4. This would've helped me a lot a while ago. The alligator cables don't have the most detailed instructions. I ended up cutting the inner linings to coincide with the metal housings, also thinking it weird that the inner linings could still move around. Oh well, next time I'll know better. Thanks for this.

Please answer where you can (I understand you JUST got the bike):<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> 1) Can you comment on how you experience climbing and descends? 2) Does the bike tend to favour more the front or the back (in terms of felt geometry)? I guess the actual question relates to the bike's centre of gravity. 3) Do you find the bike fairly manoeuvrable (flickable) in technical sections? How do you feel in the "cockpit"? 4) If you push the bike REALLY hard, does the rear end flex? Or is it fairly stiff? 5) In terms of the rear linkage: Does it appear to be of good quality (i.e. it won't come apart after a couple of months)? 6) Where did you buy your bike, what did you pay? I currently cycle with a Merida Matts hardtail (for the sake of interest) and find that the front end sometimes feels a bit "heavy"; although, one can probably attribute this to the weight of the fork (Rockshox Reba 318).
  7. Hi all. Does anyone have any experience / comments / reviews on the Merida One-Twenty HFS 1000-D? I'm in the market and, although the bike looks excellent, I can't seem to find any reviews on this bike to help with making up my mind. I plan on spending around R25k and would like a bike that is suited for all mountain / marathon riding. I also had a look at the GT and Mongoose (in the same price range), but favour the Merida. Any comments / suggestions?
