Boasting single track, jeep track, gravel roads, savannah grass and hard pack terrain, routes meander through plantations, indigenous forests, across bridges, river crossings and bush tunnels with spectacular views of dams and the African countryside. Dullstroom’s rolling hills, natural foot paths and picturesque scenery is a mountain biker’s dream! You can look forward to: A great weekend away with plenty to do and see. Over the years, hand built single track has been put together which meanders through the Magalies ravines and gorges, as well as along river banks and over bridges. The trails at the cheese farm switch between varied terrain and include river crossings, bush tunnels and spectacular views, with occasional tough climbs. You can look forward to a great day out, supporters are able to see some of the race from a hot air balloon at Bill Harrop’s Balloon Safaris. Situated only two hours from Durban and four hours from Johannesburg, this is a prime area to tackle some of the best mountain biking trails in South Africa. Found in the Central Drakensberg, Champagne Valley boasts rolling hills, challenging climbs and breath taking backdrops with magnificent mountain views. With cattle paths and hiking trails, along with purposely built mountain biking tracks that includes jeep tracks and downhills with single track, the routes also feature sharp cut backs, berms, wooden bridges and wooden curbs. Strategically centralised in the Free State, Clarens is 3 hours from Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Pietermaritzburg and is the ideal weekend break for mountain bike lovers and their families. The mountain bike trails at Clarens consist of sand road, jeep track, huge rock-trails and single track over some of the most incredible rock landscapes in this country, including a ride on “slick rock” that is not found anywhere else in South Africa. The spectacular routes in and around the town offer picturesque views over Golden Gate National Park and Lesotho and incorporates a trail that crosses the Maluti Mountains on the edge of the Lesotho border, which is considered the highest mountain range in the country. The area has a long history of mountain biking, traversing similar routes with that of the Cape Epic & Wines 2 Whales and features incredibly panoramic views that are set against a background consisting of mountains, vineyards, forests and dams. An idyllic ride, the terrain is mainly made up of farm roads, gravel and dirt roads with single and dual track routes that cross over rivers and bridges, incorporate hilly climbs and offers picturesque views of the Elgin valley and Hottentots Holland mountains to the north and the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve to the south. With routes that cut through farm land and plantations, riders need to aware of farming and forestry vehicles and follow the board markers that will act as a guide to the allocated trails.
