  1. Just to bring you guys up to speed. The frame's being cured and will be primered tomorrow The vinyles have been ordered from our resident vinyl-guy tyrone. It should all come together in the next week or so.. depending on logistics etc etc.. Then the move of all the parts. Really not looking forward to that! In the mean-time - here's a taster: http://riply.co.za/frame/Raleigh%20Frame%20Pics/02082010529.jpg
  2. I didn't call BMC :/ Sigh.. demotivated. I am considering doing it myself. The thought of me being able to say - "Ja, I painted it."' "Ja, I know, it's awesome." - appeals
  3. I found Pure Art's website and though I couldn't get through on the landline, I went through to the CBD to have a chat with them. One of the motor bike repair shops in the same street informed me that they have moved to Fish Hoek.. He had their new contact details though so I enthusiastically called them. R1000 to paint the frame one colour. Sigh.. I think that was his way of saying "I really am not in the mood to paint your bicycle".. So the search continunes..
  4. Hmmm, can you resend it boet? please send it to either chris@riply.co.za or chrisjc@voxdatapro.co.za B)
  5. Tyrone is going to do the pretty pics as soon as my girlfriend has finished the design! That's tomorrow's mission. The frame's completely stripped and flatted now.. now I just have to find someone in the CPT area that will actully paint it. I've been turned away by 2 bike shops already and 2 panel beaters :/ ... Any ideas on CPT?
  6. I'm sure that the old chap is well aware and years later, still stands by his choice. But a valid point none-the-less. BeOne, you shouldn't do drugs and then post on public forums, you're not doing your public image any good Shebeen, the pivot is just above the crank. This evening I came right with a little help from ChrisH. There was some light, stratigical hammering involved 4 hits max. I have just come out of the garage after 2 hours, frame suspended from the roof in 2 parts. The Plascom Paint Removal 'Paint' works really well. REALLY well. However, it seems that Raleigh (and I assume a lot of other brands) do not paint their frames evenly. The areas where you'd expect a lot of stones (under the bottom bracket, etc) have this invisible clear-coat that I'd liken to "God's sweat". Nothing touches this stuff. A lot of the paint pealed away nicely with minimal effort after a good 30 - 40mins soak. I then cleaned up the frame and got it ready for coat #2. The areas covered with God's Sweat, I brushed viciously with a wire brush. My theory was that the brush would cut through the coat and allow the remover access to the paint underneath and then in turn go under the Sweat and remove the rest. I was right. I was also lazy (did I mention that I have a throat infection..) and ran out of motivation at 23h00 to do a thorough job of the scraping, so now I have a grey and redish frame. The entire read 'stay' section of the frame is also covered in the God's Sweat so I will attack that tomorrow night with the brush. All in all, my DIY is going well. I will keep you guys updated and also do a nice how-to post project. dcalitz93, where-a-bouts are those chaps? I live 500m away from Platekloof and that may save me a lot of hassels when it comes to the actual painting of the frame!
  7. Sammajoor, you joke!!!?!?! I call City Cycles. They are not too sure and can't talk me through it over the phone (I'm technically minded and managed to srip the rest of the bike.. so I can't be that daft?) - please come through to the shop. [i apologise if the chap that was on duty last night is reading this, but seriously, I'm not impressed, at all.] "Ok cool, what will you charge me to remove the bottom bracket?", " I'm not sure, it depends.", "Alright, I'm on my way." I arrived and we went to the back. He looks at the frame and immediately, I can tell he has no idea how to remove it. I watch google-eyed as he takes a hammer and allen-key to the frame - ultimately mashing the thread inside the joint that they allen-key bolt 'used' to screw into. Eventually he gives it to the lacky in the work-shop, after having fked it up, and says "I'm going to leave this with you." He walks out. Google-eyed again, I stand there in the workshop with my threadless frame in hand. Annoyed and frustrated. So I took their tools and re-threaded the thing myself and left. So now.. I am in the same boat. Blasted Raleighs..
  8. I am busy doing the same to a Dualie I've just bought. (see other thread in Tech QnA) Yesterday I went and bought the correct stripper, wire brush, water papers 800 and 1200 grit, gloves, paint brushes (for the stripper).. at the end of the day: R200 odd bucks. I plan to strip the bike myself etc, and perhaps get it professionaly sprayed (but I bought enough stripper to do it twice, so I may give it a DIY first).
  9. arg, frustrated. Going to City Cycles in Anal Walk.
  10. Alright, I have all the goodies.. tx Brights. I have taken the frame apart, removed the shock and cleaned it up. However..... How the hell do you undo the bottom bracket/pivot? It has an allen-key bolt in it, removed, but there doesn't seem to be any way to take it apart? Any Raleigh RDS 9.0 frame owners out there?
  11. Mampara, thank you boet. You have just got the idea into my head to try to do it all myself! Hell if I fail, I'll take it to the Pros. I will do a little picture-diy-how-to on the Hub too for others to see / learn from my mistakes! *off to the hardware store*
  12. Plentipotential, that looks sick. I am going to give the DIY a try. I am just a little concerned about the welds/joins? So you used 2000 grit, wet, the whole time? I've watched some videos etc.. I think that I'm going to sand it and then take it to a sprayer Tarmac - shhhhhhhhhh. Don't tell anyone.
  13. Hairy, the make is the reason I am painting it. Can you think of anything in particular I'd be ashamed of downgrading to from a SCOTT? There will be plenty pics! I'm keen to try and do it myself.. but umm, yes. There will definately be some orange!! That's for sure haha.. Thanks Tristan, I will pop over there now and have a look! Do you know if they are based in CPT? Shebeen, I'm not really a fan of freeflows - too noisy But thanks haha
  14. Hi all, I'm busy upgrading from a HT to a dual.. I've bought the frame and am waiting for it to arrive. I'd like to do a custom pain job B) Is there anyone in the CPT area that has done this, successfully? "Successfully" being the operative word here!! Any help / tips would be appreciated from the JHB boys too. Tx, CJC
  15. Whoa! I honestly did not think that anyone would take THAT much time in responding! Thank you boet!! I am rather strapped for $$ atm - saving up for a trip - so the whole set is out of the question :/ If you're keen to sell just the crank, let me know?
