  1. Don't do it unless you need the 36x46 (or 36x11 for top speed and can't manage the 36x42 granny). There are some super fast dudes out there that can smoke me while riding a single speed bike. More gears will not make you faster.
  2. Couple of comments: 1) W/kg refers to body weight in normally hydrated state (i.e., don't weigh yourself after Stage 1 of this year's Epic and use that number for calculations), but if you are trying to improve uphill speed then everything benefits from decreasing weight. 2) A lot of folks do 2x20 or 2x8 (see Chris Carmichael for the math and underlying trials to support these) primarily because if you do a 1x60 properly your body will be jello for days afterwards, which is an unnecessary waste of potential training time. 3) Outdoor vs indoor: I can suffer more outdoors than indoors. I don't know why. So I use my outdoor figures to set training loads for both outdoor and indoors. Keeps me honest. 4) Racing vs controlled environment: nothing wrong with racing in principle but you need to avoid sudden accelerations or decelerations that will skew the results. Racing isn't always conducive to this. 5) Hills vs flats: as long as you can maintain a steady aerobic cadence and pace (see point 4 above), either is fine. I haven't seen any science that precludes hills, unless the hills are so steep that you dip into your anaerobic systems just trying to stay vertical. I've tested on hills up to 8% gradient and the numbers work. Last comment: I suck at testing. I can consistently do 2x8 or 2x20 efforts randomly during rides that are higher than my 'testing' numbers. I don't know why. I get all anxious and just end up blowing it. The point is: you can't fake your aerobic capacity. If you are tracking your data in Golden Cheetah or whatever, it will be pretty obvious over time where exactly your power thresholds are for each Critical Power point. So a lot of coaches (including mine, since I suck so bad at testing) end up forgoing 'tests' and just monitor the entire CP graph over time. When capacity increases, they push the training loads.
  3. I love steel and carbon both. Here are some fun facts to spice up the conversation. People who will smoke me when I am riding my steel Merckx: 1) The version of me riding a carbon bike 2) Eddy Merckx 20 years ago riding a steel bike 3) Most of the same people who would smoke me when I am riding a carbon bike People who I will smoke when I am riding my steel Merckx: 1) Most of the same people I will smoke when riding a carbon bike. The biggest class of exceptions being: anyone with a W/kg really really close to mine but riding a superlight bike on a long climb or flat section. 2) All of the same people I will smoke on a carbon bike on a descent. 3) Everyone who slows down to gawk at my awesome, 80's Merckx. People who will smoke me when I am riding one of my carbon bikes: 1) Eddy Merckx 20 years ago riding a steel bike 2) Tons and tons of other people Steel has a huge added bonus: you can get 2 or 3 vintage, top-of-the-line steel frames for the price of one top-of-the-line carbon frame. But there are some carbon frames that I simply cannot resist. Look, feel, everything is amazing. Of course carbon is stiffer. Of course steel is heavier. But the real question for consideration is: how much fun will you have blowing by a fleet of carbon junkies on your super rad steel, 80's paint-job, hats-off-to-the-gods-of-yesteryear weapon?
  4. My team is taking a different approach for accommodation and do not need our motor home parking slot. We bought it for R12,000. Selling it for R12,000. First come, first serve. PM me.
  5. What? Google? What is that? Oh man, that's a great idea, just 'Google' it!!! Wow man, never thought of that one. Then it would list all of the suppliers!!!! Awesome!!!! Then I could call all of them and hear the same story! "We're all out of stock mate! Shame!" Then maybe I could poll some non-commercial sources like friends, family, Bike Hub, etc. and see if anyone else might have ideas! Then I could get some awesome responses from good ol' Dave-o who likely thinks he's the first out of the gates with this witty lmgtfy thing - way to go Dave-o! Slowly catching up with the rest of the world.....
  6. Anyone with a motorhome willing to hire it out for the Epic, I am willing to pay good money... Send a PM if you have one! Ben
