  1. I was recently in the market for a budget front light for my MTB. I stumbled across the Surge Firefly 1200 online. It arrived promptly from Takealot. And at R550 for a rechargeable light it certainly met the (budget) criteria. Given the price and manufactured origin of the light I wasn't expecting much. However I must say it had surprised me and turned out to be quite a Lekka little light. The beam on bright is in fact very bright! It does have a slightly hot spot in the middle of the beam but it does still cast enough light around the edges that I can easily see a low branch or obstruction to the side. On maximum brightness it seems to last about four hours, this is not as much as they claim but that's normal manufacturer optimism I reckon. Overall I'm very happy with it so far. And hell, for the price you can't really go wrong. Cheers
  2. Interesting look at a new virtal cycling app being developed in China called One Lap. Basically a ripoff of Zwift No subcription fees required as of yet, just a bit clunky for those not versed in Chinese. It's very new so it might be a bit janky but its good to see some competition in this market, it can only end well for the consumer LINK: http://www.onelap.cn/ Edit: added link
  3. After having done 10,000km on Chaoyang and before that Maxxis I decided to try out a new cheapie brand from China and settled on the Innova-Pro Transformers. Now normally when you want something fancy you get it from a Boutique. Think of fine clothing, confectionery, furniture and so on. If it is fancy stuff it will most likely be "boutique" stuff. So based on that these must be really fancy because it is the first "boutique tyre" I have ever had in my life Sew fahunseh ! Fitting them on my Giant P-XC2 rims was easy enough, I added 100ml Rhino sealant in each wheel and pumped it 2.5 bar and it seems to hold that without any leaks. They do seem rather skinny compared to my old 29x2.2 Chaoyangs. Tomorrow I will test them out on Piket-bo-berg, a route I am not familiar with on tyres I am not familiar with. Let's see how it goes.
  4. A good, rainy afternoon to all Hubbers, Hope no one slipped and slid this morning! I am on the market for a few new thing for my baie-sukkel, and I was prompted by a fellow cyclist to approach the Chinese (AE) and English (CRC) online shops. Having done exhaustive research over the last few weeks, it has proven to be cheaper to buy from these trusty nations. However, I am aware that the price listed does not include our VAT, nor does it include any customs/import duties. Could someone more versed in the cycling imports hobby please be so kind as to give me a breakdown of how it works? Using an example of excellent Chinese carbon wheels, at a selling price of $300 and an exchange rate of R14 = $1.00, what would the grand total be? Does the country of origin of the goods have an effect on these extra costs? Also, I do not pay the kind Chinese man/woman the VAT or duties, who does that get paid to, and at what stage of the supply chain?
  5. Morning Hubbers I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Ali Express? They have a pretty comprehensive kit offering (which I realise isnt genuine) which we would struggle to get here otherwise. Let me know if its worth it.
  6. It’s hard doing a review on a second hand bike. You don’t know it’s history, and particularly with this one, I don’t even know its age. But this is a special review, something different, something sentimental. This is my first Beijing bike. And my girlfriend bought it for me. Click here to view the article
