  1. Hi Guys I'm very new to the world of MTB'ing, so hope I can draw from some expert knowledge here before having to head out to a workshop. I have a Titan 650b (just over a month old) and it's been riding like a dream. However from yesterday afternoon, whenever I'm pedaling I get a single *click* sound on my right pedal when it's at the top of the rotation (12 o'clock position) and my left pedal makes like a ratchet sound starting from the 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock position. So I end up with this *click* right and then ratchet Left on every pedal cycle. Any ideas what could be causing this? I can't see anything visible and wasn't about to take the entire bike apart before seeking some advice? I looked on the web, but these answers seem very varied. It happens in all my gears and regardless of seating or standing position. When I'm "freeing" downhill, there is no sound so guessing crank maybe? Thanks all, I'd really appreciate you input. Cheers!
  2. I recently bought the new e*thirteen TRS 11 speed 9-44 cassette. It's a masterpiece of engineering and enabled me to get a wide gear range (489%) without changing anything else on my 1x11 setup. You can now get a 500% gear range if you buy the Eagle drive from SARM, but this is costly as you need to change all the components. However, after a few rides the e*thirteen cassette developed a serious creak. As this cassette locks 2 parts together, there are metal-on-metal contact points which start to make a noise during use. This requires frequent cleaning and re-greasing, but it sometimes only took 1 or 2 rides before the creak came back. Being a tinkerer and fairly practical engineering type, I decided to experiment for a longer term solution. It turned out to be quite simple so I thought I'd share it with anyone else who has this problem. By putting a thin plastic membrane washer between the two interlocking parts of the cassette to make sure the contact points are shielded by plastic, you eliminate the mental-on-metal contacts and this takes the noise away (15 rides now and still no re-greasing and no noise). You still need initial greasing of the contact points. Have a look the the photos. The first 'Heath Robinson' solution used a black plastic file divider cut out using scissors. Nor elegant, but it worked well. I then decided to hijack my wife's scrapbooking cutter to cut out a precision engineered disc from laminating sheet plastic. This worked even better as it is thinner and made the cassette locking easier, and probably stressed the locking bits less. The disc is about 0.1mm thick, ID: 59mm, OD: 106mm. I decided to use a wide disc to cover both the inner and outer contact points on the cassette as I wasn't sure which ones actually contributed to the noise. I hope this helps you if you have experienced this issue.
  3. Hi all, I've had some very annoying and ride abandoning CREAKS howling at me from my BB area for a couple of weeks/months now already,.. Following some comments on this subject here at Hub Nation, I've started the process of elimination,.. My last effort, and most expensive (to date on this matter), was the replacement of the SRAM Pressfit BB (GXP) All went fantastic!,.and the only freaky creaks came from my knee, hip, back, neck and...(just kidding),..My beaut RM Vertex 999rsl was running so smooth, I kissed her good night before I went to bed,..every night ???? ...and then. THE CREAK began to Speak ???????????? Now I'm without options, BUT for this.. The little "Wavey" washer on the Drive side of my crank,..it would mean "metal on metal" after all, on my direct mount system, but would mean the same for a spider fitted to arm.. My questions: Do I really need this washer? Does it serve some sort of protection purpose between the bearing seal and direct mount blade? Will it be ok to remove it all together? And could this be the "Part" that's causing this ridiculously annoying creaking sound that just trumpets its way through the down tube, right onto my highly strung amplified low E-string?? Thx in advance
  4. My apologies if this has been posted before, so please point me in the right direction if it has. While cleaning my bike over the weekend, i heard a strange noise coming from the rear wheel. To try and describe the sound accurately, it almost sounds like the metal balls in a bearing rolling over each other. To try and isolate the noise, I even took off the back wheel and spun it while holding it, and the noise is definitely coming from around the hub, and almost sounds like the bearings dried up and are rolling over each other (if that makes sense). A bit of background, this was after riding Red Barn on Sunday where I hit the trails pretty hard, then proceeded to degrease my chain using Cleen Grean. I did spray some onto the cassette, and let it sit for about 15 mins, not sure if this has any harmful effect. At a loss as to whether the bearings are fried, what else I could do to make 100% sure, and if damaged, what the cost of replacing is. I'm a noob at this. The bike is still new (less than 100km), and it's the first time I'm hearing the noise (I always give the bike a thorough check when washing). Anyone?
  5. Hi there /DISCLAIMER: I'm new to cycling and know very little... Was hoping someone can help me, I did a race this weekend and close to the end my MTB started make a grinding sound, which I eventually identified as coming from the chain wheel. There is a bolt/screw protruding from the frame and it is making contact with the chain when on the small chain ring. The screw has clearly taken some damage from the contact. Here are 2 photos that will hopefully help - What am I looking at? What is wrong? How do I fix it? Thanks!
