  4. Hi fellow hubbers.. Am looking for some advice on purchasing maintenance tools. I can do some basic repairs on my bikes, but recently decided to learn how to do more repairs & servicing on my own bikes. I purchased a bike maintenance work stand last week, so now looking at some essential tools that I would need to get started. I have some basic tools, but thought I'd build up kit, but without breaking the bank :-) I've been looking at this option for a starter kit below. https://www.buycycle.co.za/workshop/tools/super-b-professional-27-piece-bicycle-tool-set/ Would you guys go for this one, & if so, what other essential tools would I need. I would think a torque wrench kit, but not 100% sure on what to go for as they are rather costly, & also not sure what NM I would need to go for, the Ryder torque wrench are R220 for a 5nm or 6nm. (so was thinking of getting both) Do most bikes use 5nm or 6nm...what would be the highest nm one would need in a torque wrench. I was looking at this torque wrench as well @ R899 up to 22nm, but not sure if I would need it. https://www.easybike.co.za/mighty-torque-wrench-set-2-24-nm.html Please let me know what you guys think, would appreciate your advice to get my little home workshop started. Also any other tips or tools I would need as essentials. Thanks in advance,
  5. Hi, does anyone know of anyone who does carbon repairs that does not cost the value of a new frame? Appreciate the referral.
  6. Hi, I've just bought myself a Cannondale Rush 2 and I need to start maintaining it. Where can I get a good quality solid repair stand? I saw one one CWC (http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/cwc-bicycle-repair-stand) but its so much cheaper than the other ones I've seen online I have to wonder why - is it a build quality thing, ie. is this perhaps a flimsy stand? Obviously one would want something solid. I'd definitely go for a second hand one too, does this forum double as the classifieds for this kind of thing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Lars PS. Just attached a pic of my baby cos she's hot.
  7. Rave about an (almost) tragic accident: For real technical expertise, Dr George (PhD) is the only place to go. Everyone had warned me about getting a roof rack for my car. Needless to say, after one month of bike transport bliss, I slammed my gold vintage Falcon (hand made in Britain) into the carport. The bike was mangled - frame bent, handle bars bent, both wheels locked and warped. A total write-off. That is, until Dr George (he has a PhD from a Canadian University) at Mean Machines bikes got his hands on it. Unlike other bike shops, Dr George has 35 years of experience and does all the work himself. My gold Falcon was returned to me after a week and I couldn't be happier The before and after pics show just how good the repair is. Before After (only a slight bend remaining after cold bending) For real technical expertise, my vote goes to Dr George at Mean Machines in Germiston. As with all doctors, its best to make an appointment: 071 656 4207 or 071 6591097 *** Updated: Close up picture of repaired bend *** -Andrew
  8. Hi everyone, Was hoping you could all share some wisdom wrt service costs and intervals on a full-sus bike. I just paid 700bob for a rear linkage service and new bearings - my bike is 10 months old -- Merida 120 and I've only done about 1200km on it - mix of XC and technical trail. My LBS told me that the bearings aren't serviceable and will have to be replaced yearly. This is apparently also true of my BB (shimano octalink). Does that sound right? I thought they would both be serviceable? I take good care of my bike - regular washing/ lubing, I keep as much water away from seals and bearings as possible, it's stored in a shed away from the elements etc etc. I am however 6"3 and 90kg, and ride through very wet JHB summers. Anyway my questions are: 1.Should I be taking the bike in for a service every 6 months to avoid wear, replacing parts? Or should I just aim for a full service every year? 2. Is it true that some rear-linkage bearings and BBs are not serviceable? 3. How often should I bleed brakes and replace gear cables, is it a matter of feel - or is it safer to bleed brakes at regular intervals? 4. How often should I service my fork (air) and shock(air)?

  13. Good day, As you might know, parts wear out, some faster than others, some never... I have some of my parts since 2007. Worn part obviously replaced when they break, others still working fine for me, like the rear and front derailleurs, chain rings, sprockets, discs etc. Chain rings: Damaged on some of the big chaining teeth, but never missed or slipped a gear. The others still look fine. Chain: Stretched, needs replacement anyhow so I went into mud and water with it. Rear deralleur: Replaced wheels, still working fine My problem now is the following: (Problem occurred after the muddy ride) They chain hops on all three chain rings if power is applied. Put a spare chain on (also old but not as stretched as the Fu*&ed chain) and it hops less. Is hopping on the front chain ring due to an overstretched chain? What is the symptoms of a stretched chain? thanks
