RIDERS WHO WOULD STILL LIKE TO GET THEIR ENTRIES IN, SHOULD GO TO WWW.ASGEVENTS.CO.ZA Silverstar Casino, "the West Rand's favourite entertainment destination", is bracing itself for the onslaught of a huge field of mountain-bikers who are ready to take on the iconic ride on Saturday. The event follows a new route along the Krugersdorp Ridge and boasts a wonderful atmosphere at the revamped Silverstar Casino. Those riders who dine out at the venue in the week leading up to the event will be able to sit and watch the highlights of last year's event on the massive big screen in the Piazza area. The big screen will also broadcast the prize giving function live on the day, hosted by Johnny Koen, which will enable everyone who is having lunch after their ride to be a part of the action. The event starts in the new top-end open-air parking lot at Silverstar and finishes inside the big white Super Dome, adjacent to the Piazza area. A supervised bike park will be set up inside the Dome so that riders can leave their bikes in a secure area if they'd like to go and get a bite to eat, and, as per usual, the bike wash will also be set up. Riders who would still like to get on the start line, need to get their entries in at www.asgevents.co.za The Silverstar Challenge route has always been known as a challenging task and this year will be no different, although the 20km ride doesn't have major technical obstacles, with exception of the final drop down to Silverstar from the mountain. Route director, Darren Herbst, said riders could look forward to beautiful forested sections, open fields and rocky trails with some spectacular views over the West Rand. “On a clear day, you can see all the way to Pretoria.” From the top of Protea Ridge, participants plunge down through the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden en route to the finish. “The last three kilometres will hair-raising for a few but exhilarating for most,” laughed Herbst. He said the casino finishing area, with its surrounding restaurants and children’s zone, would keep the whole family entertained for the day. Enter at www.asgevents.co.za.
