  2. After noticing several MTB riders dashing it out near my home in Kempton Park, I decided to investigate the field they apparently made their playground. Much to my surprise, the local field was hiding a tidy little single track route of approx 15km (or the part I could find at least). With it being a 'free-to-ride' track, I didn't get my hopes up too much. However, after riding the route with my BIL, him on a jumper and me on a 29er, I was somewhat impressed. Yes, this track does not compete with the likes of BigRedBarn or the like, but it is a nice ride for the Kempton locals looking for a short(ish) single track . The route is properly marked and includes a GREEN, BLUE and RED section. The RED (which we elected to ride) was not intimidating at all - with some limited obstacles closed to the end of the route. The route(s) could however benefit by the addition of some proper doglegs in the corners, more jumps and some optional obstacles (with chicken-runs for the softies ). After some investigation, I was able to determine that the local cycle shop (Finishline Cycles) was involved in the layout of the track, and that the local farmer/developer granted access to the property with this in mind - kudos to them both . One could only assume (and hope) that it is a constant effort by them to update the route(s) as and when they have the manpower and funds to do so. This being said (and if a may be so bold as to assume ), I am certain they would be grateful if riders take it on themselves to maintain and upgrade the track ... The track starts and ends through a small black gate about halfway down Blaauwklippen Rd, between Monument and Mulder Rds, next to the Glen Eagles Estate in Glen Marais, Kempton Park. I attached a STRAVA route image of the RED route, for interest... Enjoy the ride if you ever find yourself near there and fancy a MTB dash ... I am definitely making the track a regular part of my riding, and will most likely try it out with my Cyclocross this weekend .

  4. Hi everyone, I am riding in Clarens this weekend with two beginners. Does anyone have experience on a nice single track in the area? I'm allergic to endless dirt road slogging. Thanks in advance.

  6. Hi All. Been out of racing for a lot of years. Never really enjoyed dirt road type mountain biking and was wondering: What are the most technical (fun) events in the Western Cape? I'm thinking along the lines of the Piket bo berg event? Paul
  7. Greetings everyone, As many now, I am involved in organising a race and lending some help with others. Each event has it's unique challenges and is almost impossible to please everyone all of the time. The idea is to please as many of the cyclists as often as one can. From the list (above), what is important to you as a cyclist - I've tried to split it between ROAD and MTB. Please don't compare to the BIG MTB events in the sticks that enjoy big, mountainous climbs - we don't have such luxuries in the urban centres. I'm trying to get an objective view of what people would like, compare it against what is possible, and then see how we can get other organisers to buy into the collective ideas to make as many races as possible satisfactory. You'll notice that the ROAD poll has an option called PERMANENT NUMBER. While I am still trying to get some officials and race organisers to buy in the PERMANENT NUMBER concept to ease the hassles related to number collection, this one is specific to the event I am associated with: Assume the permanent number concept doesn't take off, and the status quo remains as is, would you buy a permanent "cloth" number that can be used exclusively at our event for the years ahead (and maybe one or two others)?Feel free to add to the list and submit your comments, which I hope will help my efforts to bring about improvements in cycling (in our province and perhaps elsewhere too).
  8. Hi, I will be visiting Robertson and Paarl next week for work, I want to do a few rides in the area while I am there. What suggestions do you have for awesome mtb trails in the area? Thanks!
  9. Hello fellow mountain bikers. I have read though many, MANY threads regarding mountain bike tyres, yet I am just as confused as before. In fact, I am probably more confused than ever before. What I have concluded is that its 50% preference, and 50% required riding type (terrain). With having said that, I am in search of advice for selecting the most appropriate tyres for me specifically. I live in Cape Town, and I ride mostly single track. I am 25, and weigh approximately 75kg (185cm tall). I am not a pro (no duh...), but I like to think I go pretty quickly down the single tracks, although I only started riding last year November. I ride a Large 2014 Giant Trance 02, which has a 650B 27.5" wheel-set. PLEASE NOTE: I am looking for Maxxis tyre options and combinations ONLY! If you are going to contribute to this thread, please comment with a combination of both front AND rear tyre options, rather than saying things like "aah, why Maxxis?", or "Continental is much better!" etc etc etc. I have used Continental's on my previous bike, and I am wanting to try out Maxxis tyres in particular, so please just accept that, and give me constructive advice... If any. Thank you in advance to those who find the time to give me genuine options and combinations Here is a photo of my exact bike below:

  13. Just done 35km of awesome riding on part of the 65km KONKA MTB race to be held on 7 June near Rustenburg (Only hour out of Joeys!) Second year of race and even better route! Lost of brilliant single track, cattle track and horse trails. Superb fun riding along "Penny Lane" in the riverine bush - very pretty. Some river crossings which will probably be dry and one nasty rocky jeep track climb- "Henno's Revenge" - which is rideable for those with good bike skills providing no-one stops in front of you! Race not to be missed coz you cannot ride the route otherwise.Trails even nicer than van Gaalens and that is saying something! Bring the family to the Konka Adventure centre - lots for them to do. I have just entered on Cycle Events. You won't be sorry and I guarantee you will be back with your friends next year too. Race designed by Hennie Fourie. Cannot wait for 7 June!
  14. Hi Guys I am the manager of Tierhoek Trout & Nature Estate which is at the top of the Kamberg under the sleeping giant of Giants Castle. I have recently starting MTB riding again and am teaming up with my neighbour who is going to help me create some of the best mountain biking trails in the country. We are soon going to open our cottages which sleep 4 and 5 respectively at R250 pppn if you book 4 beds. The Estate has some of the best fly fishing in Natal and you can fish 2 of the best rivers in SA, the Mooi and Bushmans both less than a 1/2 hour drive. We are 2.5 hours from Durban and about 4 hours from JHB. The High altitude will help you to train for the Giants Castle Race, Joburg2C and the Sani2C. The trails will cater for beginners & Kids, Intermediate riders, And everyone in and around. We would love to hear feedback from you guys, the MTB community of South Africa to make our trails the best "MOUNTAIN" Biking trail area in Natal and surrounds. We also have some sites for sale so if you would like your own house or shares in a house in the berg and have access to the trails year round give us a shout. It would be great to have some mountain biking shareholders on the farm which you can kit your own house out to suit your own needs.
