  1. We are looking for well-trained male cyclists aged 30 to 45 to volunteer for a study on ventilatory thresholds and performance and the effect of diet composition. Please see the attached advert.
  2. We are recruiting well-trained cyclists or triathletes who are following a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet for a study at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa, Cape Town. Please consider the attached advert and contact me for more information!
  3. Dear Bikehubbers, This is a very last-minute announcement to all cyclists (especially commuters) in the Fish Hoek area and surrounds. You are invited to a focus group to be held at Fish Hoek Library on Tuesday 23 August from 6-7.30pm (refreshments will be served, a modest stipend is payable). This focus group forms part of the Fish Hoek phase of my masters dissertation on how cyclists interact with the built environment (i.e., both buildings and roads) in this part of Cape Town. The other phases will take place in Ocean View and Masiphumelele. This is a great opportunity to meet in a small group (7 persons, maximum) with other cyclists, and talk about cycling experiences, both good and bad, around a large 2x1m map, where we will mark the places in the Far South that matter to you. The aim of the research is to produce a set of recommendations to be taken into account in future infrastructure planning in Cape Town. It is hoped that, by incorporating the views of the cycling community in a structured way that 'speaks an engineering language', it will be possible to improve the practical utility of new cycling interventions in our city. Our first session, held this week, was very successful, and I am reaching out to the BikeHub community based on a recommendation from a participant. For any enquiries or more information, please contact me as indicated on the invitation or see details online at the link in the attachment. Best regards to all - Brett A5 Invitation Fish Hoek.pdf
  4. 2,500 bicycles will be delivered to South African students beginning in June 2015 through Qhubeka, World Bicycle Relief's programme in South Africa. They will help to cut children's travel time to school and improve educational achievement. Click here to view the article
  5. I am looking for cyclists who are willing to partake in research done as part of my Physiotherapy Masters Thesis. We are investigating the possible difference in asymmety between cyclists with knee pain and cyclists without knee pain. Ethical approval is in place. Testing will take place at the FNB motion analysis lab at the Stellenbosch Tygerberg Campus Criteria: Knee pain on the inside of the knee that started spontaneously (no trauma, no history of crusiate ligament damage or meniscus tear)pain to such an extend that it limits training and performancepain present during some activities eg. stair climbing, after long sitting, during cycling, during squattingaged between 23 and 45spending at least 5 hours a week on your road bikeno traumatic injury or operation to the lower back or lower limbs. If you are interested please send an email to erikabrand@gmail.com so that I can send the questionnaire through to you.
  6. For study on the psycho-physiological determinants of pacing during prolonged endurance exercise. The study will investigate the physical and mental factors that determine endurance performance and pacing strategies in a 70km time trial as well as the differences between ‘elite’ and ‘sub-elite’ cyclists, and an individual time trial and a head-on-head competition. Please view the attached PDFs for more details. Elite: Research Poster Psychophysiology Elite.pdf Sub-elite: Research Poster Psychophysiology Sub-Elite.pdf Deadline for applications: 31 October 2014
  7. CYCLISTS WANTED FOR UCT RESEARCH DOES SLEEP DEPRIVATION IMPAIR EXERCISE RECOVERY? The aims of this study are (i) to describe the sleep habits of recreational male cyclists and to relate this to an aspect of their genetic makeup associated with preference for mornings or evenings, as well as sleep timing, and (ii) to compare individuals recovering from a single bout of high intensity interval training following either partial sleep deprivation or normal sleep. We are looking for trained recreational cyclists. If you: Are a male between 20 and 50 years of age Train at least three days per week for at least one hour per session Have a current Argus Cycle Tour time of under 03h45min You can volunteer for this study What is involved? Part A: Complete a questionnaire, donate cheek cell sample to determine your genetic variant for a gene linked to sleep behaviour, perform submaximal and maximal (VO2max) cycle tests. Part B: Have your performance, immune, inflammation and muscle damage responses measured in response to a single high intensity interval training session when you are either sleep deprived, or have had a normal night of sleep. What are the benefits? Personal and general feedback at the end of the study describing the sleep habits of recreational cyclists, as well the effect of sleep deprivation on exercise recovery. If you are interested in taking part in the study and would like additional information, please contact: Tayla Chin Kagiso Dikgomo taylachin@gmail.com kagiso.dikgomo@gmail.com 076 043 6795 074 121 0868
