2011 Rapids Country and Eco Estate Mountain Bike Challenge

The 2011 Rapids Country and Eco Estate Mountain Bike Challenge is taking place on 21 May beginning and ending at the lush Rapid Country Estate located in the Highveld grasslands of the Mpumalanga Province.

Catering for the avid; intermediate; and amateur mountain bikers, the Challenge is divided into three categories: a 40km Challenge for well-trained cyclists; a 20km Challenge for intermediate cyclists; and a 5km Challenge for participants who enjoy an ‘easy ride’. Added to the fun and festivities to ensure family participation is a hike along the river to the rapids waterfall which will take approximately two hours; and a guided 5km kiddie’s race ensures young ones are adequately supervised while participants race.

Entries are limited to 350 participants covering all three Challenges. They entry fee for the 40km Challenge is R120.00 and R80.00 for the 20km Challenge while the 5km Challenge is free. Entries close on 06 May 2011 at 17:00 but early bird entries are encouraged. All entries received before 12 March 2011 will be entered into a lucky draw and entrants stand a chance of winning a laptop valued at R7 000.00 sponsored by Experiential Technologies. A Samsung television valued at R4 500.00 sponsored by Taropa is also up for grabs.

The 350 participants will receive T-shirts and goodie bags to the value of R300.00 while a lucky draw with prizes sponsored by Coca-Cola, Tiger Brands, Nestle, Tekkie Town, Experiential Technologies, Taropa, Dullstroom Accommodation, Auto First and Endres Attorneys will take place on the day.

The 40km and 20km Challenges begin at 09:00 and the 5km Challenge begins at 09:15, while the hike also begins at 09:00. Registration to collect race numbers takes place from 07:00 on Mountain Bike Challenge Day. All pre-entered finishers for both paid-for events will receive medals; and all results will be made available on www.verticalhorison.co.za after the event.

Although the race is timed, there is no cut off although prize-giving commences at 12:00.

The Estate is close to Dullstroom and Belfast, the GPS co-ordinates are S 2531’23.33” E 30°0’13.7” (on the road between Belfast and Stoffberg taking the Leewklip road) and to get there from either Pretoria or Johannesburg take the N4, travel past Witbank and Middelburg and take the Belfast off-ramp (left). Drive through Belfast, cross over the major intersections just after the shopping centre and ensure you do not take the Dullstroom turn-off. Continue on this road through the residential area until you reach a stop street, and then turn right on to the R33 towards Stoffberg. Travel 3km, then turn left onto a gravel road towards Leeuwklip. Continue for 7.5km and the entrance to the Estate will be on the right-hand side.

Usual refreshments will be provided and safety guidelines and marshals shall be adhered to.
