The Downhill Course for 2011 will be 3.1km long with an elevation drop of approximately 415m, starting approximately 250m further up the hill from the 2009 course. The overall course direction is the same but the course has been modified to incorporate a number of steeper and rocky sections.

The course begins out of the start hut with a left-right chicane into a rock drop called "The Eyeboggler". Riders exit across a road and into a short singletrack section that leads into a road jump into a drop off and a left hand berm. This leads into a right hand turn of a dropoff into a berm into an immediate offcamber left turn. The track drops off across a road which leads into a sharp lefthand turn onto the Cloud 9 rock drop of the old 2009 course. The main Cloud 9 rock drop is the same as 2009 exiting off a benchcut down a steep bank.

The course has a large g-out over a road before entering Pebble Beach through a tight right hand turn over a large rock with a number of line options. This leads into the main rock feature at Pebble Beach which is a large 6 foot bridged drop off the rock which leads into a large rock garden.

As the rider exits the rock garden they will have to put in a couple of pedals down a fast striaght towards a large doubl before the drop into the singletrack section at Driftage. The singletrack section ends with a small rock garden. A couple of bermed corners and the rider drops into the Dr Evil drop and the large hipped gap jump above the main Gully. Speed increases to a good 50km/h as the rider hits the fly in jump into the main gully. The rider exits the rough gully over a fadeaway stepdown into the 2 main 20m long tabletops on the “N3 highway”. The pedalling section from 2009 is now called "Khathala" and has been altered by adding in a number of pump-rhythm sections using rollers, tabletops, doubles and berms.

The rhythm section leads into a short pedal section towards the “Bombhole”. The stepdown into the” bombhole” remains the same as the 2009 course which exits into the large bridged road gap over the Cross Country Course at "The Air-odrome". A number of rock stepdowns leads over the 4 Cross Course into a hipped right hander into a small rock garden. A short pedal and the rider drops off a large offcamber banked section onto the 4x and into a left hander off a big bank. The course crosses the XC course over a large bridge into a short rock garden. The course rejoins the 4 Cross Course over a large step down for a short sprint into a 14m long right hip jump called "THE MONEYMAKER" followed by a 13m long left hip into the final 13m fadeaway stepdown to the finish!

Cascades XC track.

The Pietermaritzburg World Cup XC track is brand new for 2011 with a number of man-made rock gardens having been introduced to make the track more technically challenging. The track is 6.1 km long with 316m of climbing with most of the climbing taking place in the first half of the track, there after the track is predominantly downhill, with a number of technical sections to spice things up.

The new track see’s a start shoot being introduced to allow the riders to jostle for position before conquering the first climb. This short lung-busting climb will become more and more difficult as the laps go by. The next 600m of track drops back down to the start finish area and meanders next to a stream, spiced up with small man-made rock gardens and a zig zag climb into the first forest section. The track then joins a fire road, allowing for over taking opportunities. This wide road is broken up by a short section of fast flowing singletrack. The return to the contour road is short lived as the track starts to climb up one of the longer stretches of uphill singletrack.

Once again the track joins a contour road and ducks underneath the Downhill track. At this point the riders are at the second highest point on the track. From here the track drops into “Oliver’s Twist” which is another fast flowing piece of singletrack. From “Oliver’s Twist” the riders will enter the “Amphitheatre”. This area will be one of the talking points of the 2011 course, with a combination of wide bench cut singletrack, tight bermed corners, rock sections, bridges and log drop off’s. Towards the end of the “Amphitheatre” there is a short steep hill which will allow for another over taking opportunity.

Between the “Amphitheatre” and the “Tree House” the track undulates without any major obstacles. The “Tree House” however has undergone one of the most dramatic changes for 2011. With 12 truck loads of rock been placed by hand, this section will test even the most experienced riders. Control and line choice will be key to getting through this rock garden fast.

From the “Tree House” to “The Quarry”, the track is a combination of forest roads and flowing singletrack. Riders would be wise to gain their composure before entering “The Quarry”. “The Quarry” is the last rock garden of the lap and consists of roots, rock’s, off camber track and some tight lines. Once through this section there is only 600m, before the track joins the start shoot.
