This hugely popular helmet, was designed by John Cobb, an aerodynamics legend in the cycling industry. The Wingspan is simply one of the best performing Triathlon – Time Trial helmets in the world!

The Wingspan offers a wide array of configurations through the use of the components within its aerodynamic kit (included: 2 front covers and 1 tail cover). From the wind tunnel results and data elaboration, we suggest basically 3 solutions: CLOSED, NET and OPEN.

The CLOSED configuration offers the best aerodynamic efficiency but the least ventilation. It is recommended for short/medium competitions where timing is king.

The NET configuration is a very good compromise between ventilation and aerodynamics. It lets air go through the vents and cool the temperature while protecting the head against bugs and insects. It also maintains a very good aerodynamic efficiency.

The OPEN configuration is the best solution for long distances and/or hot weather conditions. The maximum ventilation is definitively needed for keeping the cyclist cool. Due to the longer racing time, a lower temperature outweighs having the "max" aerodynamic advantage since it could affect a racers ability to compete over the long haul.

Rudy Project Rockets Forward

in Kona Time Trial Helmet Count

Denver, CO – Results are in and Rudy Project is proud to announce a 12% gain in market share in the Time Trial Helmet category at the 2010 Ironman Triathlon World Championship, held on October 9th in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. A longtime favorite eyewear and helmet brand among triathletes and cyclists alike, Rudy Project revolutionized aerodynamic cycling with their launch of the Wingspan TT helmet at the 2009 Tour de France.

“The Kona 2010 results prove what we stated with confidence when we introduced the Wingspan,” said Paul Craig, President and Co-Founder of Rudy Project North America. “We predicted this helmet would rock the athletic world with its radical design and unequaled aerodynamics. The best of the best triathletes have made their choice – Rudy Project’s Wingspan.” Rudy Project ranked 3rd overall in the Kona helmet count, while the number one and two brands dropped 18% and 23% market share respectively among the world’s top triathletes.

While the Wingspan’s striking appearance makes it an immediate standout from the competition, the highly engineered details – designed in consultation with aerodynamics guru John Cobb – secure its spot as the leading aero helmet available today. Of particular appeal to triathletes competing in the furnace-like heat of Hawaii are the Wingspan’s massive exhaust vents and removable vent covers, creating substantial airflow and a comfortably cool ride. “I spoke with a ton of our athletes following the race,” said Chris Lupo, Rudy Project’s Sports Marketing Director. “They all confirmed the Wingspan provided ample venting and was remarkably cool during the grueling Kona conditions – debunking the myth that all TT helmets are excessively hot.”

The Wingspan’s adjustability, with 15 possible venting configurations, is what allows for its exceptional comfort. “Remove the front and back covers and it’s like having a vacuum cleaner at the back of your head,” attests Lupo. “When time is a cyclist’s sole concern, all the covers remain in place. But when temperature comes into play as well, the ability to customize the Wingspan is invaluable.” The Wingspan also includes a removable tail cover to reduce turbulence, fully incorporated ear covers to reduce drag and Rudy’s R.S.R. 7 Disc retention system for easy on-the-fly adjustment. All this at only 280 grams!
