17 November 2011 – Cycling South Africa, affiliated to the UCI (International Cycling Union), a member of SASCOC (South African Sports Confederation Olympic Committee), and Sports and Recreation South Africa, is recognised as the controlling body for the competitive disciplines of Road, Track, Mountain Biking, BMX and Disabled Cycling within South Africa.

CyclingSA has four levels of coach education in place to support the nurturing and development of cyclists. These cycling coach training programs, some of which were initially developed in Australia, are now delivered by CyclingSA under the strict guidelines of the South African National Coach Accreditation Scheme (Cycling SA-NCAS)

All accredited cycling coaches are recognised as having met the standards under the Cycling SA-NCAS, which are recognised by SASCOC.

The workshops and courses are designed to meet the needs of all types of coaches, from the first-time community coach to the head coaches of National Teams.

The Roles and Function of the Coaching Commission

a) Work cooperatively with other Cycling South Africa commissions, committees, affiliates and staff to achieve a coordinated approach to the development of cycling in South Africa

B) Review the content and monitor the delivery of CyclingSA’s National Coaching Accreditation Scheme cycling courses.

c) Disseminate information on current sports science/sports medicine practices, coaching principles and coaching practices to all active CyclingSA accredited coaches

d) To make recommendations to the Board of Management on coaching and athlete development issues covering the spectrum of athlete participation

e) Endorse and monitor payment of any funds or grants to coaches or coaching programs

f) Recommend the appointment of any coach to a position within the national structure, including satellite coaches

g) A member of the Coaching Commission, or their appointed representative, shall accompany the Technical Commission in the inspection of all courses and venues that are intended to be used for South African Championships

C4L (Cycling for Life) and LTPD (Long Term Participant Development)

Cycling and Sport for Life (C4L) is an initiative of SASCOC and Cycling South Africa, through its National Coach Education Program, planning for the sport excellence and wellness of South Africans. Cycling for Life supports LTPD (Long Term Participant Development) because it:

  • Helps all children to be physically literate (competent in fundamental movement skills and fundamental sports skills as well as physical activity)
  • Recognises that children play and participate in sport to have FUN
  • Is a pathway to excellence from playground to podium
  • Allows all South Africans to be physically active through sport and recreational participation

Being a coach requires passion and dedication. Being a great coach, however, requires additional guidance and support.
