What is the best material to build a bike from? And more importantly is it available? I am looking for 3140 chromoly but dont know where to get my hands on it in SA.

Any feedback appreciated.

you'll have to import the chromoly. look at "henry james", they have complete kits available for mtb and road. you could build from carbon fibre, but the cost of the material is quite high in South Africa and I don't think you could build it less than what a no-name brand would cost, there are suppliers out there though. look at the lugged kits and then do a youtube search, not difficult to build up at all.

Aaaah great...i thought the 4130 might be difficult to get hold of. Strange considering we have so much steel avail to us here in SA.

Im looking to build a fixie, which will be a larger bmx ultimately. WAs contemplating mild steel but weight might be an issue. Will keep looking.

I know Salvo BMX are making frames from 4130 but have contacted them with no success in finding out where they get it from etc.
