New SRAM shifter - WTF ?

Have just installed a new LH SRAM X4 shifter on my bike - checked a couple of Youtube vids to see how to adjust. The first up shift I do the indicator cover flies off and shifter splits half open !!!!!!!!!!!!

Looking at tthe casing it seems the only thing holding the indicator side of the casing together is ....well....nothing.

 

Is this a crap design or a crap install ?

HELP !!
