can one use a 3x... grip shift (front derailleur only) on a 2 x 10 set up?

So, my wife struggles to shift the front derailleur (SLX) on her 2 x 10 MTB, due to an abnormally short thumb (due to her being abnormally short, one could say...). I suggested bolting a thumb extension onto her thumb, but didn't go down to well.

I am not flush right now, so the option of buying a new 2 x 10 gripshift is not going to happen. Is it possible to just replace the front shifter with a 3 x ... gripshift one can pick up cheaper. Would it be possible to adjust it in a way she can uses it to change between the 2 front blades or does the 3 x shifter not work at all?

thanks

Should work fine. I run this setup on two of my bikes. The major difference on the front shifting is on the deraileur. 10-speed guide plates are narrower. Also there are many front deraileur options depending on the front chainring options.

If you wifes SLX shifters are direct mount compatible, then changing to direct mount should get the shifters in her reach.

I am currently running a X0 3x gripshift with 2x X0 Front Derailleur. No problems with this setup at all.

Just need to get the cable tension correct and set the limit screws on the FD to prevent you from overshifting to the big ring. It took me a bit of tweaking to get it spot on.
