Bottom bracket confusion

Please help oh enlightened Hubbers:

 

I have an old Alpina with a horrible cup and cone type BB. I am not sure if it is an Italian or english thread, but I can find that out easy enough. The question is:

 

What do I need to convert it to a "more modern crank" In other words, am i limited to buying a n older type crank or could I buy a new (eg) shimano crank and get adapters?

Any normal threaded BB will work, just make shure if it is Italien ot British thread.
