Event Name: Ride The Rhenoster

When: 1 September 2013

Where: rhenosterspruit conservancy, Gauteng

Category: MTB

The annual Mountain Bike Event is here again!

Consensus is that this is a tough, technical ride! Join us on Sunday 1 September.

A diverse technical trail is available only ONCE in a year to a small field of Riders. The ride is open to all nature lovers, and people who want to make a contribution to conservation.

Ride the Rhenoster is a fund raising event for Conservation.

This event is an opportunity for Mountain Bikers to give back to the landowners who protect the limited open space in Gauteng.

Landowners carry the responsibility and costs of protecting an area of great ecological value. The heritage value of the area is also significant, being on the same dolomitic structure as the Cradle of Humankind.

Read more about what make this area worth protecting.

The trail is designed by Miles Crisp and an intrepid team of riders. The trail is well-tested before the event. All these riders give their time, energy and talent without compensation.

"Having this natural space to come and enjoy is a great priviledge. This close to Joburg is a bonus!"

Sir Juice is sponsoring energy drinks and juices at the mid-way point.

Cost is R180 per rider, with all proceeds to Conservation.

The field is capped to 350, so book your place as soon as possible. There's about 100 entries available at the time of the event posting.

Your booking is confirmed on receipt of payment. No cash taken on the day of the event.

Distance: approximately 40km. A shorter circuit of about 20km will also be available for those feeling less fit, or less comfortable with a long technical ride. Because all proceeds go towards the conservancy, the price is the same for the 20km.

Start & Finish: The Ride leaves and returns to a host site about 6.5 kilometers north of Lanseria Airport. The venue is accessed from the R512. Directions sent with confirmation of booking.

^ what he said.

Just a note that I'm in no way officially involved with the event, besides shamelessly punting it and being a resident on the conservancy. I moved out onto the Rhenosterspruit Conservancy just over 5 months ago, and moving from early morning dirt road or night rides in North Riding / Lonehill / Fourways to this has been phenomenal. I've learnt that when you ride into a herd of 20-30 wildebeest with eyes glowing like demons in the LEDs at 9pm, you truly KUK yourself.

I spoke to one of the organizers to get clearance to post this event and share what I'm sure will be a pretty awesome ride with fellow hubbers.

Here's a few of the pics I've taken on rides over the last 5 months of living out on the Rhenoster. These are on occassion that I actually stop to take out my phone for a snap... most of the rides I selfishly keep to myself in my head :P

The pic of the well-maintained lawn is of base (Owl River Lodge) that opened its doors to MTBers 3 or 4 weeks ago with some virgin trails having just being built.

Hope to see you there.

There'll be boerie rolls and horrogs (hot dogs) and beer for sale there, but bring cash dollah.

While tomorrow is gonna be somewhat unpleasant weather, Sunday's forecast is a little nippy at 7am - 6 degrees, warming up to 16 by 1pm. Partly cloudy, with 10km/h winds.

Agreed, very lekker ride. Yoh, that legs climb.... almost made it, just lost my line 3/4 of the way up the concrete strips. Boeries and beer at the end went down like a home sick mole.
