Where do you get your gear (helmet in particular)

I'm looking for a downhill helmet but struggling to find anywhere local that stocks them. Wary of buying online because I know how packages are treated... seems dicey for a helmet. Can anyone recommend somewhere local?

If you take out the option of buying on line your choice is limited.

 

A good option is to find out what you want and then go and ask your local bike shop to order it for you. Most of them will be happy to bring the product in.

 

Unfortunately there are just not enough people buying these kind of products to warrant local bike shops keeping stock.

 

Another option is to look at shops that stock motocross gear. A lot of the MX protective gear is good for cycling at well.

If you look hard enough you'll find them. Bell and Fox do DH specific helmets that are available locally and as Dave mentioned, your LBS will be able to order you one and I am sure that they will be able to arrange a sample for you to try on before you part with your hard earned cash.

 

Alternative is an MX helmet. Bigger range to choose from and if you are a bigger guy, the additional weight penalty won't be that high (Depending on how high up the range you are prepared to go...)
