Points of lubrication

What do you do to keep out dirt from between the crankarm where it goes on splines and the frame where the bb is.i can see that there is some grease there.do i take it out every now and again and put new grease in or what.

When watching "An Epic Tale" last night they put lube onto the forks stanchions, what would that be? Should I be doing it too?
