Even though I've been riding a mountain bike for almost 2 years commuting to work it has only seen dirt twice. The first was a short ride on the jeep tracks on Table Mountain joining the guys on their Wednesday morning ride. The 2nd was yesterday on my first real MTB ride in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Managed a respectable 21km's with some awesome scenery and great single track riding a combination of the Blue, Red, and Black trails in the Valley

I surprised myself I think in how well I managed some of the single track. No bails, but a reasonably close one riding the wood berms which are not a great idea if you're not carrying much speed and the wood is wet. Crossing a raging torrent carrying your bike is also not recommended.... that was a little hair-raising even if the waterfalls were quite spectacular.

Yeah .. mountain biking is pretty cool, had a great time and would like to do it again.

But having said that ... it still didn't beat the feeling of riding a Unicycle down some steep/technical downhill single track
