Sorry to ask, but how do you get to that the spoke pulls on the same wall thickness off material on both..see pic

 

The blue line is where the spokes will pull

The deflection happens like here, see red lines.

So there is no extra material to stop the deflection?

Correct but the way I see it the extra material in the Arch's mitigate flexing of the rim in different sections, meaning that the lateral loads are transferred to more spokes resulting in less stress on each spoke and avoiding high load on individual spokes.
