Beginner road bike for under R11K?

Hi

 

I have been riding an MTB on the road for a while now but am thinking of getting a road bike for a better riding experience. Usually a 2 hour ride once a week. The options are overwhelming. What exactly should I be looking at?

 

I know my budget narrows it down a lot but still. I have no idea what's what. Are there any new or used bikes (2-3 yrs) that are regarded as being good value? I think this is my main problem as I have no background for this type of biking.

 

Been looking at Merida, Giant, Trek.
