High Altitude training has been proved with numerous scientific studies to be beneficial to endurance athletes. If you are a runner or cyclist doing any important race in the near future, the best way of getting an advantage is to spend some time at high altitude. This will increase your red blood cells and the oxygen carrying Hemoglobin on your red blood cells to increase your endurance/performance. When you get back down to a lower altitude, you will be seriously strong, feeling like you can carry on without stopping for the whole day!

From previous training camps at Afriski some track athletes increased their hematoctic value to 52 with an overall improvement of 15% to their levels before the training camp.

This is a real advantage if you seek those few extra meters or seconds over your competitor that will earn you a place on the podium! There truly is some real proven results to training at high altitude at Afriski.

Afriski at 3050m is the perfect venue to do this type of training with numerous routes to run or cycle and stay comfortable after your hard day's training in your chalets or room. Afriski has the highest restaurant in Southern Africa and you can be sure of the best nutrition.

Here some testimonials of world class athletes about high altitude training at Afriski:

“Training at Afriski allows you to sleep high and train time efficiently since you are right there on top of the world.

The luxury accommodation makes up for the extra effort you tax to your body and the skilled sporting staff are at

hand advising how to make the most of your time at altitude. This makes the venue a brilliant all in one training

destination for the athlete that wants to take their training to new heights.” (Ryno Griesel - current world record holder of fastest Grand Drakensberg Traverse.)

“Afriski is a great venue if you are looking to do some high altitude training. It is surrounded by epic trails with no shortage of high altitude vertical meters and some breathtaking views. There is also a nice variety of 4x4 and open dirt roads giving you some variety in your training if need be. The food is great, the accommodation is super comfortable and the staff are super helpful and friendly making you feel right at home.”(Ryan Sandes – South Africa and probably world’s best trail runner.)

Training options:

You will feel like you are literally riding on top of South Africa when you train in the mountains of Lesotho.

There are big gravel roads undulating going to the mine, jeep track going all the way to the escarpment and the top of the Tugela falls, and then there are the awesome smooth single tracks that are handbuild and still really fresh all over in the bowl that Afriski lies that are endless fun and that you will want to ride the whole day if you have the legs and lungs at the altitude! Also some awesome downhill tracks are waiting to be played upon and some dirt ripped out of!
