Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) continued his blistering start to the season by sprinting to victory in the third stage of the Tour of Oman.

The Norwegian, who won three stages at the Tour of Qatar earlier in the month, beat Andrea Guardini (Astana) and Matteo Pelucchi (IAM Cycling) to the line on the flat 158km stage starting and finishing in Al Mussanah Sports City.

There was no major upheaval in the general classification, with Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing) retaining the race lead.

As soon as the flag dropped teammates Jef Van Meirhaeghe and Preben van Hecke (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise), along with Alessandro Tonelli (BardianiCSF), went on the attack and carved out an advantage of almost 10 minutes inside the first 35km.

They were steadily reeled in and caught with 16km to go, leaving the sprint teams plenty of time to fight for position. Despite interest from a number of teams it was Katusha and Kristoff who were strongest on the day.

Shortly before the breakaway was caught there was a crash in the peloton involving Warren Barguil (Giant-Alpecin) and Matteo Trentin (Etixx-QuickStep) among others. While Barguil managed to get back on, Trentin was forced to abandon the race.
