Running to improve fitness?

Hi everyone, I am a complete novice at mtb and been training for the past 2 weeks. Running 2 days and mtb 3 days out of the week. I am extremely unfit so thought the running would help me getting fitter faster. Been reading alot online that running can compromise your cycling since it works different muscle groups. Is there any thruth in it? Only been doing 4km of running at a time and then I dont run the full distance since I get out of breathe.
