Domino 320km Charity Cycle Challenge Drakensberg to Durban (in one day!)

The challenge:

There can be nothing more rewarding than participating in a momentous physical challenge in order to save and change lives. Yet that is just what the legendary 320km Charity cycle offers you; the opportunity to push your body to the outer limits of endurance and capability whilst raising funds and creating awareness for a huge segment of our people in dire need and in abysmal circumstances.

This is the event that most serious cyclists aspire to ride. 12 hours of vasbyt and camaraderie never experienced in any other event. A cycle longer than any stage of the TDF, where the jerseys are worn with pride and your head is held high because you made a difference! A ride that has left many in tears at the finish.

You may have tackled the Argus, ridden the aMashova, the 94.7, and the Tour Durban. You possibly have tackled the Cape Epic, Double Century or the famous Freedom Challenge. You might have even spent some time serving the bike god of mud and rock. But this is different. This is not a race. This is an opportunity to push yourself to places you have never been before; an opportunity reserved for serious cyclists to work with a team of like minded individuals to reach an enormous goal. Every kilometre of road covered is an achievement. Every kilometre represents lives saved or changed.

This is a ride for life - a ride in which your passion as a cyclist combines with our passion to help some of South Africa’s over 2 million orphans many of whom are HIV+.

The route:

We start at Little Switzerland at the Oliviershook pass and ride all the way down to Durban, finishing at Glenridge Church International the same day.

The how:

You need to be fairly fit and willing to work in a group to get to the destination together. This is not a race but a ride for charity. You move out of your group and you get taken off the road - we keep the money. We will have some strong “domestiques” in every group to help get you to the end. Groups will be about 20 strong and 10 minutes apart. The principle is that just as we are raising funds and awareness for the less fortunate, so we allow the stronger cyclists to help the group become a stronger unit.

The when:

The 320 Charity cycle is an annual institution that takes place on the first Monday in December. The ride has not been ridden for 3 years but has been revived thanks to the invaluable input of the Domino Foundation. See www.domino.org.za. This year the event will be held on Monday the 7th of December. We leave by coach from Durban on Sunday 6th December at 10am and travel to Little Switzerland. We stop for an early lunch at Mooi River (you will need some cash for your meal here). We then proceed to our hotel where you will be at leisure for the rest of the afternoon. You will be sharing chalets so choose your partners carefully – we don’t provide ear plugs. There will be a compulsory pre-ride briefing before dinner. The condemned then enjoy a hearty ‘last supper’ before getting some rest in anticipation of the 5:30 start.

Why the Monday and not the Sunday? The first Monday in December is World Aids Awareness Day and so we choose to join them for this day. Additionally, the roads are quieter on this day and we can slip through Winterton, Escourt, Mooiriver and PMB with few problems.

The cost:

Physically, a good few training rides in excess of 160 kms (you should have either done the Jock, Double Century or a 100 miler this year), and the ability to work with a peloton and maintain a 27/28km per hour pace for 12 hours.

The hidden cost is the sacrifice of your day which may mean a loss of income or a lost day at work – for many people a big donation which is hugely appreciated.

This is an elite event limited to 100 entries. The total cost of entry is R3500 per cyclist.

The physical costs for the ride total approximately R2500 per cyclist and we donate R1000 per cyclist to the Domino Foundation R500 (payable immediately) secures your place. There then needs to be a payment of R3000.00 by the end of October or proof of sponsorship to cover the balance. Funds can be raised via www.backabuddy.co.za if you choose. We can provide you with event information and Domino’s charity documents for your sponsors.
