Average speed is just one of the ways to measure the type of ride AFTER a ride.

 

The only things you should worry about during a ride is your HR and TITS.

(time in the saddle). If you want to, you can scroll through the menu and check out what your max was on the last hill or what your average speed is etc. But it's not what you base your training on.

 

If you were to ride a certain flat course right now keeping your HR at 65% you would do it in a certain time. Ride it 5 days per week (still at 65%) and that time will decrease. Thus your average speed will increase as your muscles get stronger and your aerobic capacity increases.
