Hi guys. Could some one explain the difference between a convention, top swing and front mech for me when it comes to front derailers, and when would I know which one I need? many thanks in advance.

A complex question.  Usually a FD is a top or bottom pull.  That is the cable either runs along the top tube and down to the FD so the cable pull is upwards.  The cable may go down the downtube, under the BB and up to the FD so the cable pull is downward.  Some FDs may have a routing choice so that they can be used either way.

There are also different ways that the FD can attach to the frame so that is also a consideration.  The number of gears on the cassette and the number of chainrings on the crank add a further variation.  If you are replacing a FD and have the old one use it as a sample.  If not take the frame with the crank fitted into the shop to make sure you get the right one

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually building up a bike, works out cheaper, and when looking at the group sets it asking me which FD I want. Will be using a 2 x 10 or 3x 10. Not quite a racing snake just like to explore
