Hi fellow members , im writing this in the hope of findeing a solution.

I upgraded my scott mtb from 3x9 to a 1x11 system , everything is doing well exept for 1 thing , when in freeride going downhill and going over rocks and bumps their are one hell of a clattering noise.

It sounds like its comming from the cassette.

If I take my hand and move the cassette back and forth quickly I hear that sound.

Any one have had the same problem mabe ?

Its the bigger coxs of the cassette that have play on and can move a little back and forth with I think is the noise I head over rough terain.

Any help would be appropriate.

Thank you in advance.

What hub? I presume normal shimano style freebody. These can have variations in length and when you fit the 11 speed cassette you may need a spacer ring under it.

The cogs should all be tight against each other with no relative movement when the lock ring is correctly torqued.

If a set of cogs is loose this can be because the cassette is too short for the freehub body or because rivets/pins that hold the cogs to the central carrier are loose.. Loose pins very unlikely with a new cassette.

Thank you for reply JXV

Think its normal shimano hub yes.

So what you sayin is I probably need a spaces between biggest cog and spokes correct ?

How would I know if I need the spaces or not ?

If I remember correct I think the old cassette tha I took off did have a spacer but could not get the locknut to catch fred with the spaces in again so I removed it , if I remember correctly.

Planning to take of the cassette today after work to inspect what is wrong.

If it is a spacer issue then ALL the cogs should be loose.

I've noticed the lockring on my new 11spd Shimano cassette has a short thread. My Hope hub came with a 1mm spacer. Without that spacer the cogs are loose but when it is fitted only about 2 turns of the lockring's thread engage in the driver body.

Consider using your old lockring if it has a longer thread....or ask LBS for a thinner spacer....they often have leftovers lying around.

Thank you for your help JXV.

Inserted the spacer last night and everything is tight now.

So yeah haha.

Going to test after work today but im sure my noises will be gone now.

I had a terrible rattled develop after I changed a freewheel body hub. Either there is too much clearance between the splines and the gear cluster, or the internal bearing clearance was not shimmed in the factory correctly but I will live with it until I have to change it in the future
