rudi-h Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 the resistance (and alleged safety concerns) of disc brakes boggles my mind... its just by far superior technology on every single level and i don't get how better braking performance can make anything less safe... That's like saying we shouldn't allow ABS because the car behind you (that might not have ABS) can crash into you if you lock up on the highway... in 3 years from now you won't be able to buy a rim brake bike anywhere in SA, so it's time for the UCI, CSA and race organizers all over the world to wake up...

You jest, but that was actually a widespread argument upon the initial introduction of ABS! You can opt out from using them, but why criticize those that do adopt them? The EU long since phased in mandatory ABS on all new motor vehicles sold (with 125cc engines and larger). I totally agree, proper (hydraulic) disc brakes are superior not only in stopping power, consistency of performance and modulation, but also a plethora of secondary benefits thanks to no longer requiring a breaking surface on the rim. I think a lot of the complaints originate from mechanical disc brakes - an abominable application of the technology that should be outlawed!
