Johannesburg - The father of two young boys died on Sunday and two of

his cycling buddies were injured in a hit-and-run near Nigel on the

East Rand.

Mias Jansen van Vuuren, 49, a property developer from Boksburg,

died on the scene of the accident on the R550 (the road between Lenasia

and Nigel).

Frikkie Jansen van Vuuren, 40, was full of abrasions and

bruises and was in a stable condition on Monday in the high care unit

of the Sunward Park Hospital in Boksburg.

Kenneth Constable, 39, of Elspark in Germiston, was discharged from the Glynnwood Hospital in Benoni on Sunday night.

Don't know what happened

His cheekbone and his jawbone were cracked and he had abrasions and bruises all over his body.

The group of about nine men rode to Heidelberg from Freeway

Park, Boksburg at about 05:30 and they had been on their way back when

the accident occurred at about 08:00.

Constable said a few of the men had been riding some way ahead and that Mias and Frikkie had been riding with him.

All that Constable could remember after that was how people "fiddled with me" and loaded him into a vehicle.

Frikkie also could not remember much.

"He said to Mias, 'Let me know if the pace is okay,' and the

next thing (he could remember), he was kneeling next to Mias,"

Frikkie's wife Estelle said.

She said Mias had died "rather immediately".

"When he (Frikkie) was kneeling at his side, he said, 'Mias, talk to me,' and then there was nothing."

Santi Magan, one of the cyclists in the front group, said a

motorist had stopped next to him and told him that their friends had

been hit by a car.

Magan rode back, phoned emergency services and had given Mias mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in vain.

"I think he (the suspect) hit them and then made a U-turn."

Mias's family were too shocked to speak to the media.

Damn, sorry to hear that.

My thoughts and condolences to the family of the deceased and I hope those that were injured make a speedy recovery.
