Abnormal Cassette wear??

Hi fellow Hubbers!

So as i follow my weekly routine of giving my beloved bike a scrub today, I noticed what I perceived as abnormal cassette wear, unless I'm just imagining things...- so that's where you guys come in: the photo in this post shows my cassette. The larger cogs seems to have the chain profile imprinted. This can't be normal? Some additional info that may be important. I am running a campy chorus 11 (2014) drivetrain, chorus cassette (11-29), cassette is only about 2000km (!!) old, chain is KMC X11-93 silver, installed new same time as cassette. This is the first time I have paired a KMC chain with my campy drivetrain, thought I'd give them a try as I've only heard good things...; never noticed this type of wear pattern, especially after such short time, with campy cassette/ campy chain combination.

Oh in case you guys wonder: drive train thoroughly cleaned every 1-2 weeks, and adequately (in my opinion) lubricated with dry lube.

Thanks guys!!

just my opinion...that cassette is toast so is the chain

why?..

maybe your derailleur has too high a tension or your derailleur hanger may be bent, causing the chain to ride a little too close to the next largest cog either way its kaput

(some kmc chains are a tiny bit wider than other makes and im sure if that's the case it didn't help )

id take your bike to a campy experienced mac and let him look before you fit new kit and then let him set it up after you do (or he does)

and for a road bike you are washing your drive train too much mate (not that that caused the damage but still)

sorry to be the bad news fairy

Eish I thought this would be the case...

Any recommendations re capable campy mechanics? I know Finish Line cycles has a good reputation here in Jozi but I've had my derailleur hanger replaced there around the same time I replaced my cassette and chain. They would've looked at tuning etc...

why are you replacing your hanger was it damaged or bent ?

not good

questions ..(as it appears the hanger repair occurred when this cassette and chain where replaced so they are possibly related )

did they put a new hanger on or did they straighten the old one maybe? (just asking not accusing )

...do you know the hanger is actually straight?

did they fit it correctly (as in did they correctly check its alignment with a tool considering a bent hanger means bent screw holes, bent screws ,possible damage on frame etc)

why was it bent ? if you have a prang or a dropped bike ...is your frame bent a bit maybe ?

stick a question for a good campy mac up on forums im not in jozi so I cant recommend

- The hanger was replaced with a new part

- no, can’t say for sure that the hanger is straight. I like to do a lot of work around the bike myself but I don’t have the tools to verify hanger alignment and such.

- I assume that the hanger was fitted correctly, but again I can’t say for sure. I guess this would be more reason to have the fitment verified by a reputable 3rd party.

- I bought the frame second hand so it may be prior damage. I noticed misalignment when in the big ring/ > 21 cog as the bottom jockey wheel didn’t seem to be perfectly centered under the cog.

Thanks for all the advice, really priceless!

Just as a side note: I ran a 11-25 cassette (+/-5000km of use) with a reasonably new campy 11 chain and the bent hanger for a good 2000km with no abnormal wear.

tension adjustment on the RD may have changed with new cassette and chain (different mac sets it different and the tension affects cassette wear )

and a slightly wider than std chain (not a bad thing normally but an added problem in this scenario) ......

could explain why it didn't show with old 11-25 setup

id still get the hanger checked with an alignment tool though

sorry mate

you should change it soonest before it eats your chainrings

Thanks for all your advice. Will have the entire setup incl hanger alignment looked at this coming week. [emoji1303]

just me, but I don't bother with what the chain-ring looks like unless you have issues with gearshifts...  i managed to clock thousands of KM's on every cassette / chain pairing that i've ever done and had very few issues so far.  lube your chain, do the cleaning / maintenance you've been doing and keep on riding.

Only difference with me is I don't do dry lube.  wet lube all the way on MTB and road bike.  I don't care too much about the so called "grinding paste", as long as the chain runs quiet i'm happy.
