Hi

Many of you may already have heard about a freak accident that happened On Giel Basson in Cape Town last monday.  Attie was on his way to work on his bicycle and collided with a stationary truck that was parked in the cycle lane.

He shattered C6/7 vertebrae which essentially caused several spinal cord damage. He is paralyzed from the neck down, with limited shoulder/arm/wrist movement (no finger movement).

Currently he is still in ICU at N1 City Hospital,  recovering from 2 operations performed  to reduce the fractures and put pins/plates in to keep everything in place.

He is feeling a lot less pain now after the second Op, and is doing a lot better. It is sad to think that a multiple Comrades finisher and a multiple Epic finisher will never walk again, but he is strong-willed and Im sure he will rise above the situation.

His Rehab is starting next week at Vincent Pallotti, and will probably be a few months long.

For those interested, you can follow his rehab progress on a blog:

And there is a campaign to help the family cover some of the expenses
