As others have said, remember to factor in VAT and shipping when importing yourself.

Also, the local agents (Avnic) only honor the international Garmin guarantee if the unit is imported by them.

If you have a problem (unlikely) with your self imported unit, you will need to ship it back to the supplier at your own cost.

Depending on your intended use of the unit, you might want to check which map sets are included when you compare the local price against self import options.

Buying the Garmap maps separately can be costly.

The Garmap products are not bad in the cities, but off the beaten track the quality varies a lot. I do not often use a GPS for city navigation and thus do not own any Garmap map products.

I use the Tracks4africa maps (Jonkershoek is 99% covered).

When I bought my first GPS (2003??) there were no topographic GPS maps available for SA. I needed contours maps for my mountaineering trips (also very useful on the MTB), so I started doing my own maps. At present AfricaTopo covers the whole of RSA.

I purchased two Polar 725X HR monitors through total Cycling.  I took the HR Monitor to Polar. They could not confirm that TotalCycling was a Polar Agent. I was in a hurry and purchased two new PC boards for the Cadence meters. I contacted Total Cycling and they credited my Card Account. Since then I had my Watch and sensore there for servicing without problems.

I received a questionaire form Polar where they ask all sorts of questions. If they bring new equipment with all these features they are surely going to kick butt!!!!!!

I hate it when an International product gains a South African agency and they refuse to honour the product they sell purchased elsewhere!!!!! I am a Garmin fan and use their products but who the hell does AVNIC think they are not to honour warranties of Garmin Products purchased elsewhere!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly my sentiments.

On top of this they force you to buy their expensive map products by bundling it with the GPS units. (Avinc also own Garmap).

All my Garmin devices are self imported and I do not own any Garmap products. At the time there was a substantial saving even after paying VAT and shipping. Not sure if this is still the case.

So far I have not had any problems with any of my devices.

I think its unlikely you will have issues with Garmin. I also bought all my Garmins (and I have four) in the USA and I have never had any issues. I just buy the local mapping for my Street Pilot.

That said Avnic dos have an excellant back up service, so maybe it balances itself out, my wife got a bottom of the range Garmin with her cell phone upgrade, she used it for a few months and wanted a better one, so she called Avnic, told them the story.......................and they said, No problem, - they organised with a rep to have an upgraded one delivered to the dealer closest to us and she only paid in a small levy and of course the differance between the cost of the units, so I guess you just gotta weight it up, what suits you.
