For years, the Lion Man Mountain bike race has been a favourite among the mountain biking community since its inception in the early 2000’s. Experience the scenery and wildlife of Mabalingwe as you navigate the challenging terrain of this beautiful Big 5 Reserve. This year the race is built on passion and love for our Reserve, and R150-00 of your entry fee will go toward wildlife and conservation efforts on Mabalingwe.

The 20km:

A great race for the beginner held in the southern part of the reserve, with a mere 300m of elevation. The route will be a quick ride around the outskirts of the South-eastern part of the reserve, past one of our famous watering holes, up to Kalahari Oasis, down and around to the Western side of the Reserve, before returning to the finish line.

The 40km:

An intermediate route with over 500m of elevation, spanning across the Southern part of the Reserve, will be sure to give any rider a good morning workout. The route starts off with a trip to the South-eastern part of the Reserve. The cyclists then make their way towards Kalahari Oasis, down and around to the Western side of the reserve, back to the finish line.

The 80km:

This route, with an elevation gain of over 1400m, separates the lions from the cubs, where the winner will be known as the ultimate Lion Man. The cyclists will start off with the same route as the 40km, until they start the gruelling climb toward Vodacom Hill. If they survive, they will continue toward the north side of the reserve towards the Elements road, weaving back to the north-western side. The final challenge will be riding the back of the western mountain range to the top before coming back down toward the finish line.
