Here's the problem.

The chain just doesnt want to move onto the largest sprocket. Limits set correctly and all the other gears work perfectly. Anybody else had the same problem running dual control?Ouch

Maybe check your B screw setting

Turn the limit screw for the low setting (cannot get to the technical name right now) out a fraction

Check if you der. hanger is straight

You have probably adjusted the cable when the Shifter was already 1 click into it's ratchet. release the cable. Make sure the shifter is set to rest, ie the gear it would be in to allow the derailleur to sit under the largest sprocket. Then adjust the limit screws so that the derailleur is under the largest sprocket.

Now insert the cable into the derailleur and tighten up. Pul on the cable to seat all the cable ends and the housing in the shifter. release the cable and pull it through again. Tighten up and take up the paly with the tension adjuster on the shifter. It Shoud be fine now.

remember a 9s shifter has 8 clicks

Thanks guys.

1. The b tension screw is in all the way. Helps but does not solve the problem.

2. Limit is correct. You can actually push the derailleur onto the sprocket but it does not go on on its own accord. It's as though the spring can't move it up. This problem is new.

3. Haven't checked the derailleur hanger but I haven't dinged it since I have had this problem. Would a bent hanger/derailleur affect only one gear?

4. The ratchet is set correctly. If you releas it, it starts to move up but wont move all the way.

I am about to strip the whole thing and set up from scratch but just want to know if there is something I am missing? Is this perhaps due to sticky cable housings. What gets me is that it is only the one gear. My chain length seems fine as well.Confused

I might be confused' date=' but would that problem not relate to a High normal setup?

No. Low normal. Releasing tension on the cable doesnt allow the chain to move back onto the low gear by tension on the derailleur spring. Something is preventing it reaching its natural rest position.

Top Normal = top or highest gear = Smallest sprocket.

Low Normal = Lowest gear = LArgest sprocket

That could be because you have added to much tension on the barrel adjuster..

The barrel adjuster adjusts the travel for each click. It works perfectly for all gears. The only problem is in returning to the normal position i.e. low gear. Why does the derailleur not want to move from 2 to 1.

I fear it might be contaminated housings but I have XTR cable kits which were installed in May and there shouldnt be a problem after such a short time.

Dirtbreath,

if  the shifting workls fine from sprockets 11 to 28 but not in the last gear then:

-You have adjusted the barrel adjuster too much and have now unsynchronised the shifter from the derailleurs position.

- you have a kink in your derailleur cable,

- there is a stone or other debris blocking the rear derailleur.

Cables - I have had similar issues (and many others) with RD in past.  In the end in 99% of problems it is to do with cables and housing.
