Overseas you can buy breakaway bolts for rear derailleurs' date=' that are specifically weaker than the bending point of your fancy dropout and will break before damage can occur.

I dare you though to go to your LBS in SA and ask for a Breakaway bolt.

So you carry a spare bolt instead of a spare hanger? The bolts are pretty standard across the board arent they? Great idea.Thumbs%20Up

Even better are some frames that have a built in derailler hanger, break the hanger and you need a new frame!

If it's the bolt that holds the derrailleur to the hanger then yip they are standard (aren't they usually hard to get to and remove though?) but the one holding the hanger to the frame are not even the same per different frame from the same manufacturer .........

Just an example Specialized have at least 2 different hangers for their MTB's (1 has 2 little bolts ala Epic and some stumpjumpers) and the other has 1 bigger bolt ......

The breakaway bolt hold the derailleur onto the frame/hanger. From what I have read up, these bolts were used before they started putting in removable hangers. There are mixed reviews about these bolts as in a lot of feedback points to problems with shifting and damage to the derailleurs when these bolts give way.
