on that note - isnt the whole point of KDE/Gnome to make the end user's life easier. so that he doesnt have to worry about root permissions etc. In a sense they're borrowing from mac/windows

not everyone is technically inclined' date=' or cares to be. DVD players sell well because they are simple to operate. Imagine you had to boot up to a prompt then type in bash commands to mount /dev/dvd0, then download a codec, and try run a video player. No, they just put it in and push play. Yes, some of the "Security" is sacrificed (eg: no enforced age restrictions), but its simple and thats what sells. The same for PC's. People dont want to be programmers / techno heads.

They just want to use the thing. With as little techno geek speak as possible. Sometimes it is a dangerous thing, but its certainly easier to use and operate than something thats fantastically powerful, but way too complex for your grandmother

A (l)user should still have some basic knowledge, like;

- What a file is,

- how to identify the type of file it is, and

- where they friggin put it on their system.

If they don't have at least that knowledge, then a PC is completely wasted on them and they shouldn't be using anything more than a thin client.

However I was starting to like your description of the DVD player, I was thinking that it sounded like one I might be able to use with out assistance from the home appliance consultant (my wife).   Big%20smile

XEROX labs.

However a GUI doesn't change the user / permissions  / security model, it just changes how you interact with the system. If you don't have permission to execute a file, KDE / Gnome etc arn't going to solve that problem.

Hmmm. Imagine you had to know how to assemble a spark plug before being "allowed" to drive a car.

I'm with fand on this. People don't care what a file system is or what "root" means. They want the pc to enhance their lives without having to go on a 3 year swotting spree just to learn how to mount a dvd

Well best they buy and install a good firewall, anti-virus and anti-spy ware. Also best they keep there system up to date with the latest patches for both the OS as well as these products. Oh ****, they don't know how because they arn't computer literate.

Catch 22.

You either get a secure computer system, or one that is easy to use.

Or you get a Mac. You CAN have your cake and eat it too.

I have a couple of Gnomes in my garden and they have no root access permissions. This came about after my <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Labrador chewed off half of Grandpa Gnome?s right arm. In a peace pact, the Gnomes granted root access permission to the dog, who now makes full use of this and digs up everything in sight, roots and all.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

They don't have to be computer literate to pay a techie to do all those things.

I don't have to be "car savvy" to keep my car in a running condition. I pay a mechanic to do that for me. I don't want to know how a clutch works. As long as it works, I'm happy Big%20smile
