If she thinks her bike is butt ugly she will never ride it even if it is the top of the range schwing schwing with the latest shpongles and dongles. Put your money into the saddle and shorts and spare a bit on the bike. Keep her on less technical dirt roads and a hard tail will be fine. Keep it simple and dont take her straight down knargly single track.
