Tandem Wheelset....... choice to be made.

I can get the following wheelset at a closeout sale in the USA. The price is US$220-00.

The wheelset is as following:

Velocity Dyad Tandem Wheel 700c

Velocity Dyad rims, 40 spoke, 145mm Hugi rear hub, Velocity front hub.

The problem is that both hubs are disk hubs. The rims are V-Brake compatible so it will work. The question is:- Does the offset due to the disk hubs make the wheel a weaker wheel, or should I buy these rims and use them as is????

It will not make a difference to the offset on the back wheel. As it is, the back wheel is spaced so that the left and right spokes are the same lenght. The rear axle is 145mm wide which gives enough space to centre the hub nicely, with space to maneuvre should you want to redish the wheel to 135 or 130mm.

On the front wheel it will dish the wheel slightly, but it won't result in any weakness that can manifest on the bicycle. What I'm trying to say is that yes, the wheel is laterlally weaker on the one side but, lateral strength is not an issue with bicycles since all the forces are radial.

Buy them.  Hand-built tandem wheels are in crisis in South Africa.

Coolheat doesn't bring in 48-spoke shimano hubs. They have to be imported. The US cost is $195, before shipping, VAT etc.

Then, tandem rims are in short supply. The DRC importer has zero stock and has been promising a consignment since October last year.

Mavic tandem rims are a disgrace.

Tandem-length spokes are in even shorter supply. No-one has the right lengths in double-butted.
