Rebuilding Tandem wheels

I want to rebuild my old tandem wheels using the old hubs (Chosen sealed bearing 40 spoke wide flange tandem hubs), DRC ST19 40 hole rims (newly procured in RSA) and Sapim spokes.

Before I rush headlong into my next project, just a few questions:-

Can I re-use the old spokes

Can I re-use the old nipples (at my age even old nipples are acceptable!!!!)

Do I need to refit the spoke head spacer washers as fitted to the old wheelset

To what tension do I tighten the spokes (Kgf, N or lbf) I have since converted to NOT using the Park Tensiometer but will still use it as a independant check as my "tyre lyre" technique is not perfected yet

Can I reuse the old hub. There are no visible cracks but there are indents left by the previous lacing of the spokes. See in the photo below that the convention of relacing the spokes in the same direction was not upheld by the wheelbuilders previously rebuilding this wheel

Also will it matter if I use normal spokes on the rear non drive side and butted spokes on the drive side?

Would the spoke tension in a double butted spoke be different from a normal spoke?

To what tension do I tighten the spokes (Kgf, N or lbf) I have since converted to NOT using the Park Tensiometer but will still use it as a independant check as my "tyre lyre" technique is not perfected yet That question can only be answered if someone has built exactly the same set of wheels before, using optimum tension and then measured it. The figure is arbritary. Go for high tension.

Can I reuse the old hub. There are no visible cracks but there are indents left by the previous lacing of the spokes. See in the photo below that the convention of relacing the spokes in the same direction was not upheld by the wheelbuilders previously rebuilding this wheel  You can reuse the old hub. Pity about the marks on them but no-one will see it.

Using "ordinary" spokes with double- butted. I take it ordinary is straight-gauge. Never use straight-gauge spokes unless you cannot afford the R1-00 extra for proper spokes. Straight-gauge are easy to build with but not durable at all, especially not for a tandem.

No, tension is tension. The wheel cannot see whether the tension is from a piece of string, an elephant's nostril hair or a double-butted spoke. Go as tight as you can get before the nipples start to turn with difficulty. Oil the nipples, spoke threads and nipple seats in the rim liberally with gear oil before you start.

Just had my tandem wheels rebuilt with DT Competition spokes on the front' date=' and Sapim spokes on the rear. [/quote']

Often one has to mix brands. Not all spoke lengths are always available in a particular brand. You then mix and match. There is no real difference between SAPIM and DT Swiss. I like Sapim because the slender shaft is longer than on DT. DT's butted ends are much longer. But in the end we're talking grams and who cares?

SAPIM double-butted is not available in this country in MTB sizes since the importer has his own ideas on the validity of double-butted.

I assume it means the following:-

straight-gauge spokes - all same thickness

proper spokes - double butted?????

PS...... would it not be nice if girls were available as "double butted"!!!!!!!!

Thanx vir inligting bo Johan....... wat maak ek met die ou speke????? Ek vind dit moeilik om sulke goed (ou kettings ook) weg te gooi!!!!!!

Ja, straight-gauge is oraloor dieselfde lengte. Dit kan 2mm wees (normaal) of soms 1.8mm.

Proper spokes is altyd double-butted.

Beste voorstel ooit. En as jy dit met 'n sidecutter, eerder as 'n cable cutter sny, dan's hulle sommer skerp ook.

Wie wil my biltong he? Eek eet dit nie. Ek sit dus nog steeds met hondered stukkies blink draad.
